Physiology Related to School Physical Education from a Historical Perspective to the 21th Century

Dr. Per-Olof Åstrand graduated from the College of Physical Education, Stockholm, and Karolinska Institute-Medical School, Stockholm, Sweden. Now Professor Emeritus, Dr. Åstrand is Doctor Honoris Causa at eight universities, Honorary member of the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Sports Medicine, and the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. He was professor of physiology at the Karolinska Institute, and member of the Assembly for awarding the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine, 1977-1988.

His research interests include work physiology, particularly the oxygen transporting system in humans, limiting factors for maximal aerobic power, effects of environmental factors, physical performance in relation to gender and age, health and fitness, preventive medicine, and rehabilitation. Dr. Åstrand has co-authored with K. Rodhal a textbook of work physiology (McGraw-Hill) translated into seven languages.

Classifying Movement Skills: Implication for Motor Development and Movement Skill Learning

Dr. David Gallahue is Dean of the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, and Professor of Kinesiology at Indiana University, USA. He is the author of widely used textbooks in the applied study of motor development and age-appropriate physical education for children. Dr. Gallahue has been a visiting professor, guest lecturer, and keynote speaker at universities and conferences around the world.

He is past President of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, past Chair of the Council on Physical Education for Children, and currently International Advisor for the Asian Council on Exercise and Sport Science (ACESS) and the International Society for the Study of Children. David Gallahue has been recognized internationally for scholarship and leadership focused on children, and has received an Honorary Professorship from the Chengdu Institute of Physical Education, China.

Claudine Sherrill, EdD

Adapted Physical Activity: Service Delivery System, Profession, and Scholarly Discipline That Benefits All Citizens

Dr Claudine Sherrill is best known for her pioneer work in disability rights, inclusion, and social justice for all related to sport, health, physical education, recreation, and the creative arts. She is President of the International Federation of Adapted Physical Activity (IFAPA), an affiliate of the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education (ICSSPE); a Fellow of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education; Professor-Emeritus of the Texas Woman's University (now fully coeducational); and Editor-Emeritus of the Adapted Physical Activity Quarterly.

Her research and teaching interests are broad, including many areas within adapted physical activity and disability sport, but also mainstream sport history, sport sociology, and pedagogy. Her research mainly pertains to the affective domain; sociological perspectives on sport inclusion, exclusion, and empowerment; and to concerns of disability, gender, race, and other minority groups. Dr Sherrill's best known book Adapted Physical Activity, Recreation, and Sport: Crossdisciplinary and Lifespan has been translated into Chinese.

Kazuhiko Watanabe, PhD

Biomechanical Evaluation of Basic Postural Control and Sport Performance in Youth

Dr. Kazuhiko Watanabe is professor at the Graduate School of Education, and Head of the Laboratory of Physiology and Sports Biomechanics at Hiroshima University, Japan. He is Advisory Professor at Shanghai Institute of Physical Education and Guest Professor at Beijing Normal University, China.

Dr. Watanabe was awarded the IOC Medical Commission Prize in 1998 for his research in Biomechanics and Physiology of Sport at the Nagano Olympic Games, Japan. He is a member of the research staff of the Japan Olympic Committee. His research interests are postural control in human movement, and physical activity for elderly people.
