Objectives
This symposium will focus specifically on the practice and practicalities of
teaching Values Education in schools. There is widespread agreement that one
of the main aims of basic education should be to equip children in schools with
values and attitudes that will enrich their own lives, and enable them, as thoughtful
and sensitive citizens, to contribute to the maintenance of society. The main
problem with values education is therefore not its justification, but rather
how to teach it in the classroom.
This symposium, jointly
sponsored by the Hong Kong Institute of Education and Living Values Educational
Programme, will attempt to draw together examples of best practice in Values
Education from across the Asia Pacific region. Keynote speakers, from around
the region and from UNESCO, will help to set the context and inspire discussion.
Workshop sessions will provide opportunities to engage with practical teaching
approaches that can be used in the classroom.
