Yuen-kay looks forward expectantly to her future teaching
career, once she has graduated. The care and attention she received from
her teachers formed a lasting impression on her. She understands fully
that the teaching profession asks for total commitment and dedication
in order to nurture the younger generations. She recalled, "I was
not a top performer in primary school and tended to shy away from doing
homework. Refusing to give up on me, my class teacher gave her own time
to coach me in homework, after school. She aroused my interest in studies
through her story-telling. She enlightened me with her way of looking
at life, and accommodated me with her tolerance and care. Because of her,
the course of my life has changed profoundly; from her I learnt to appreciate
that the core of teaching is 'people' and not just knowledge."
Her exposure in social service has enhanced Yuen-kay's communicative skills and her ability in handling crises. But she can still remember vividly the hair-raising experience she encountered during her teaching practice days at a school. "At one of my teaching practices, when I demanded a student hand in his assignment, I was totally taken aback that he responded with foul language. Only after the counselling of the principal and teachers was I able to recover from the shock. Since then I appreciate that we have to fully prepare ourselves as teachers. At HKIEd I acquired class management and communicative skills which are indispensable for each prospective teacher." Yuen-kay who has shown her compassions towards the under-privileged
will surely excel in her teaching career to the benefit of the younger
generation. |
