Cultural expeditions in Suzhou

Suzhou is one of the oldest cities in China, and a very refined and sophisticated form of Chinese culture appears everywhere in the city. From the meticulous miniature recreation of natural landscapes in its classical gardens to Kunqu, the most ancient and still active musical drama form, students have ample opportunities to learn from the rich artistic atmosphere. Kunqu itself is an integration of singing and acting, its lyrics are a subject for literary appreciation providing insights into a major genre of Chinese literature rich in rhythmic and tonal elements and elegance of style. Participation in the First International Conference on Chinese Kunqu and the Suzhou University Festival of Culture, Science and Arts have further enriched our students' learning experience. During the 16-week immersion, our students were given the chance to study rhymed literature while immersing themselves in the rich artistic cultural context of Suzhou.

Under the mentorship of Professor Zhou Qin, they were encouraged to try singing the poems and composing lyrics and they took part in recital sessions with local literary clubs. They could also experience how traditional musical drama infuses the daily life of ordinary people and becomes a part of their life.

Students at Suzhou stayed in the university student hostel where they mingled with local students after class. They also got the opportunity of being exposed to a large variety of linguistic situations during their stay, both when they were required to use Putonghua in socialising, and dealing with daily matters, and in interviews, discussions, presentations and debates during their course of study.

Cultural expeditions arranged by Suzhou University for our students were guided by renowned academics in the field. For example, visits to classical gardens Liu Yuan and Zhuozheng Yuan were led by Professor Cao Lindi. By visiting places rich in historical background like the Literature Temple which commemorates Confucius, and attending local cultural events like concerts of the Huqiu Qu Ensemble, students were able to trace the footprints of ancient intellectuals and experience the daily activities they would have experienced
