Durham and Suzhou, repositories of Western and Eastern culture

Immersion is not only about language development, attitude change, confidence or maturity. More important than any of these factors, is the realisation of language as a cultural phenomena which immersion brings about. The Immersion semester is carefully designed to make sure that this realisation is a positive experience and will result in cultural enrichment.

Cultural expeditions in Durham
The University of Durham, HKIEd's first partner institute in this pioneering scheme, is a seat of learning dating back to 1832. Drawing on its long established expertise in the area of language and culture, it offered our students a wide spectrum of courses ranging from Experiential English to People and Culture. Students also had the chance to take part in a production of Alan Bennett's stage play "Habeas Corpus" together with other students of the University of Durham.

Our students lived with host families during the 15-week immersion semester. Here they were provided with a lot more than food and lodging; the families also took up the roles of cultural guide and linguistic tutor. Participation in family activities, visits and outings, as well as joining other members of Durham University for various social events enabled students to engage with local life and develop li

fe skills essential for learning from English-speaking culture. The city of Durham provides a wonderful backdrop for immersion. An ancient and very beautiful city, it has an 11th Century cathedral and a Norman castle both of which are designated as part of a UNESCO World Heritage site.
