Delegation from UK universities visits HKIEd
A delegation of scholars and management from 13 UK universities visited Hong Kong in November 2006. During their 4-day visit, which was arranged by the British Council, the delegation exchanged views with their Hong Kong counterparts on subjects such as Hong Kong's higher education system and agenda for internationalisation. Professor Louisa Lam, Associate Vice President (Learning Enhancement and Development) and Dr Peter Bodycott, Director, Centre for International Education shared HKIEd's experiences on its collaboration with universities in the UK with regard to the setting up of partnerships, implementation, challenges and further review with the delegation. Delegation members also took the opportunity to visit all Hong Kong's UGC-funded tertiary institutions, including the HKIEd, for further discourse.

Producing A Midsummer Night's Dream in winter
On 4-7 December 2006, over 1,700 secondary school students came to HKIEd to watch the Shakespearean drama A Midsummer Night's Dream; jointly staged by the Centre for Languages in Education and the Department of English, in an adaptation for second language learners. This is the third production by the very committed team. Its debut performance, acbeth, took place in December 2005, followed by Pride and Prejudice in April 2006. The production provided students with a valuable opportunity to improve their spoken English, while the performance itself served as an ideal platform to demonstrate the results.

Participants enjoyed fruitful exchanges on how to reform education effectively and actively prepare the next generation within the Region for the challenges of globalisation. The Conference was organised jointly by HKIEd (Asia-Pacific Centre for Education Leadership and School Quality), Asia-Pacific Educational Research Association (APERA) and the Hong Kong Educational Research Association.

Educators from the mainland's mountain areas visit Hong Kong
With the generous donation from the Drs Richard Charles and Esther Yew-pick Lee Charitable Foundation, a team of HKIEd teaching staff and students visited Liannan (Guangdong Province), Napo and Debao (Guangxi Province) in China's remote mountain areas last summer. The trip was organised to advance teaching and learning in local schools in the region. Acquiring further teaching experiences from their Hong Kong counterparts on-site, 44 members from these Chinese cities paid a 7-day visit to the territory on 1 January 2007. The group seized every opportunity for professional exchange with additional visits to the EMB Service Centre in Kowloon Tong as well as a local school renowned for its innovative teaching practices.

The passage of time ¡V Children's literature in Hong Kong

The exhibition Passing on the Torch: Exhibition of 65 Years of Children's Literature in Hong Kong was held in November and December 2006, displaying the creations of over 30 children's literature writers in Hong Kong. Various rare magazines and newspapers on children's literature of historical value were also on show.

The exhibition was a collaborative effort between the HKIEd Library, CUHK University Library and Hong Kong Public Libraries. During the exhibition period at HKIEd, renowned children's literature writers, A Nong and Dr Fok Yuk-ying gave public talks on the appreciation and creation of children's literature.
