Participating in the AIA Quest for the Champion Communicator 2005

To reflect its newly attained self-accrediting status and enhance its competitiveness in recruiting and retaining academic staff in the university sector, the Institute introduced a new set of professorial titles as compared to the old lecturers' titles. Academic staff have been briefed and consulted on the "migration" prior to its introduction.

The new academic titles of Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor and Lecturer - consistent with other universities - will help raise HKIEd's academic profile, recognise the continuously upgraded status of our academic staff and improve staff prospects. Academics with the old lecturers' titles can voluntarily apply for migrating to the new professorial titles based on their academic qualifications and other strengths.

In the meantime, professional positions such as teaching fellows and senior teaching fellows are created to attract talents who may not necessarily be involved in research.

Parallel to this development, academic and non-academic staff are being consulted on a proposal of a new salary structure which is being "de-linked" from that of the civil service. Reference was drawn on the remuneration packages of other UGC-funded institutions. Benchmarking was also made against general industry norms for non-academic staff. The consultation is still in progress.
