Student teachers conducting drama workshop at secondary school

It was a sunny day in April 2005. Six budding student teachers from HKIEd confidently trooped into the school auditorium of Law Ting Pong Secondary School to meet three groups of students who formed themselves into circles. The HKIEd members, working in pairs, joined the students of Cantonese, Putonghua and English-speaking groups and began to play games with them. Amid the fun and laughter, the students followed the instruction of their teachers in communicating in pantomime, practising in chorus the articulation of certain words with animated facial expressions, gestures and body movements.

Joy of Learning witnessed the last drama workshop which culminated in the final production of two plays entitled "Love or Money" and "Justice" staged by F.4 and F.6 students of the school. The workshop is the collaborated efforts of HKIEd English Department and Law Ting Pong Secondary School where the final year students of the BEd(L) English Major act as trainers to coach students in revising scripts, speech delivery and team building. The impression that these student teachers give is one of confidence, vitality, amicability and professionalism.

The techniques which the student teachers mastered and applied at the drama workshop with seemingly relative ease was in fact acquired by involving themselves in the HKIEd drama productions, "A Night Out" and "Ernie's Incredible Illucination" when they were in the second and fourth years. Through these productions, they were helped to gain greater confidence to "act" in front of a crowd; an attribute that is very useful to a teacher who similarly "performs" in front of an audience.
