Project Title: Install Your Life

Category: Art education activity

Project Summary:
This project is an art installation education activity under the theme “Cherish Your Life, Live Positively”. Our target audiences are Form 3 to Form 4 students. We hope to encourage secondary students to think deeply about the meaning of life and express the message of “Cherish Your Life, Live Positively” through art installations. They will also learn to cope with crisis and life depressions, and develop the values of embracing life and being positive.

“Install Your Life” will launch life education and art installation workshops conducted by professionals in April. Participants will start from exploring art installation, learn how to convey their ideas through artwork, and then turn them into expressive art installations. An art installation exhibition entitled “Cherish Your Life, Live Positively” will be organized in August to showcase the participants’ masterpieces.

Project Summary:
During the Chinese New Year, everyone believes that auspicious signs will bring prosperity and fortune throughout the year. We will apply visual arts communication strategies to initiate an unusual New Year Bazaar stall filled with Chinese auspicious symbols. Passer-bys, no matter coming alone or with their family, can capture this “auspicious moment” with our specially created and contemporary New Year characters: Lucky Food, Spring Couplet and Red Packet. You can even dress up and become the “God of Fortune”! Get inspired with a new experience other than consuming in the New Year Bazaar only!

We have put great emphasis on the creative design of the New Year characters, props and stall decoration. Apart from gaining experience on running a business, we have also unleashed our creativity and put it into practice. Our strong motivation in creating a mercy and fortune-filled festive ambiance will flourish the community. Besides, we will donate part of the revenue generated from the photo-taking after deduction of the cost to Orbis Hong Kong and support its sight-saving programmes.

Project Title: Development of Multimedia and Interactive Guide Used in Museums: Learning Art through Constructive Appreciation and Criticism

Project Category: Art education research

Principal Investigator: Dr Tam Cheung On
Co-Investigator: Mr. Ng Mau Wai Clive

Project Summary:
This project aims to develop a multimedia and interactive guide that can be used in museums for the learning of visual arts through art appreciation and criticism. A group of six HKIEd participants will conduct in-depth studies of ten selected works of the Hong Kong Museum of Art. Participants’ knowledge of these art works will then be organized and transformed to produce relevant audio, visual, and textual materials in the form of a portable individual interactive guide. These guides will be made available for secondary school students visiting the museum. Constructive learning and contextual art appreciation will be the guiding principles in the development of the guide. The value of the project lies in its capacity to enhance visual arts learning of all project participants, including HKIEd and secondary school students. School teachers will also benefit from the project in terms of better integration of studio art teaching with appreciation and criticism using mobile technology.

Project Title: Art in Old Shops

Category: Art exhibition

Principal Investigator:
Mr. Wong Kai Yu
Ms. Iman Fok (Hulu Culture)

Project Summary:
The project will organize cultural tours and lead HKIEd Visual Arts students to carry out field studies around Central and Sheung Wan district from April to June, 2010, in which the students will learn the characteristics of the community and gain inspiration for art creations. Creative workshops will also be arranged as a platform for the students to exchange ideas with the professionals in art and cultural field. Students will then work on art works which incorporate innovative forms of art with traditional Hong Kong culture and handicrafts. Selected works will be displayed in old shops and restaurants in Central and Sheung Wan to encourage the audience to walk into and communicate with the community.

These activities not only enable students to understand and appreciate the local culture, but also integrate the new insight into art creation, thus strengthening a sense of mission in preserving, inheriting and innovating upon.

Project Title: Elderly Day: Integrating art and health activities for old people in Tai Po

Category: Leading student groups in community services project

Principal Investigator: Dr Anissa Fung

Project Summary:
Elderly like to be seen and respected as experienced senior citizens but not “expired manpower”. The feeling of being productive can flourish their positive attitude in life. This project provides opportunities for senior citizens to participate in the process of art making integrated with health activities. Special ceramics and craft activities will be designed for elderly to exercise their hands and fingers at the same time motivating them to create their masterpieces. The full programme will start with art making workshops, followed by an exhibition of participants’ artworks, talks on health diet, daily medical care and demonstration of limbs pain release exercises by professionals as well as cultural and artistic programmes… these will be presented to the public on the “Elderly Day”, paying tribute to the Tai Po senior citizens.

The experience of organizing the community carnival entitled “East-Asian Cultural Experiences in Tai Po” has shown that the elderly enjoy social events as much as the youngsters. This project starts the engine for a sustainable community art education service to the elderly community so that they can enjoy the fun of learning art as well as engaging in social activities.

Project Title: School-based Service Learning Scheme: Leading students into school communities

Category: Leading student groups in community services project

Principal Investigator: Dr Wong So Lan

Project Summary:
The concepts of service-learning have evolved over the last 25 years. Teachers who have extended their classrooms into the community - whether to another school campus or the community-at-large - have already begun to integrate elements of service-learning into their pedagogy (Cho, 2006). Service Learning differs from other forms of community service or volunteers work because the education of students is always at its core (Kaye, 2004). Students need to use what they learn in their formal study to work with others and make a beneficial difference to their communities (Fales, n.d.).

Through service learning, this project will provide a context in secondary or primary schools for the HKIEd’s Visual Arts students to help school visual arts teachers to amend their school-based curriculum, according to the paradigm shift of the visual arts curriculum change. As the keystone of service-learning pedagogy is reflection (Tayolr & Ballengee-morris, 2004), through series of reflection and exchange sessions, VA students and school teachers will have a platform where they can understand each other. Based on such reflective discourse, school-based curriculum and teachers’ preconception in traditional mode visual arts teaching may be revised and developed. Our VA students will also benefit from this in-depth reflection.
