SES Seminar: Building Up a Sustainable Community: What We Could Do and How We Could Do?
- On 29 November 2011, the Department of Science and Environmental Studies (SES) organized a seminar titled “What and how we could build up a sustainable community”. Ms. Christine Loh, the CEO of Civic Exchange, was invited to share her knowledge and invaluable experience built up from her long years of work on environmental protection. Three staff members from the Department had also shared their research in the field of environmental studies and education. Dr. Y. C. Lee discussed the way how organic farming can facilitate sustainable agriculture. Dr. Stephen Chow talked about the scientific solutions to water pollution in East River of South China. Dr. Irene Cheng reported from her 2011 study about local primary teachers’ misunderstanding of some major environmental issues and their perceived difficulties of environmental education in schools. Prof Ka-ho Mok, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, encouraged us to reflect on our daily living for learning to lead a sustainable life, rather than just learning from textbooks.
The seminar was well received by colleagues and fellow students of the Institute as well as teachers and staff working in the non-government organizations. More seminars on environmental sustainability would be organized by the Department in the coming days in the hope of developing a niche in our community working for building up a quality environment of Hong Kong and beyond.
