Hall Publication : School Driver

The origin of the name “School-driver”

Once, the two editors, Cherry and Frances, were busying themselves in brainstorming a specific name for our Northcote Hall Newsletter.  As they noticed that alumni usually call their alma mater, Northcote College of Education, in abbreviated form which sounds like “Screw” in Cantonese, they simply used the abbreviated form as the name of the newsletter. However, when Frances further suggested “Screw-driver” as the new English name of the newsletter, Cherry made it “School-driver” on the computer screen instead.  Whatever the mistake – mispronunciation of or mishearing the word “Screw”- that’s the origin of the name, “School-Driver”!
