The new president of the Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd) Professor Anthony B. L. Cheung outlined his vision for the future of the Institute at his formal installation ceremony today (26 March).
Professor Cheung said he was accepting the honour at the most exciting time of change, when the Institute is evolving to be a leader in education that strives to contribute to lifelong learning and human betterment in Hong Kong, China and the Asia Pacific Region.
“Driven by our vision to become a university of education, we at the Institute champion an ‘Education-Plus’ concept, where subject disciplines are being enhanced in addition to achieving excellence in professional education studies,” he said.
Since starting his presidency on 2 January this year, Professor Cheung has outlined several key priorities to pave the way for the Institute to become a leader in education in Hong Kong and the Region. They include attaining University status, securing greater resources and funding, and implementing key strategies outlined in the Development Blueprint.
The Honourable Donald Tsang, Chancellor of the Institute and Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR Government, presided over the installation ceremony held at the Institute’s Tai Po campus.
Distinguished guests, including representatives from the government, other universities and members of the education community, along with Council and Academic Board members, as well as hundreds of faculty, staff, students and alumni, joined to celebrate the milestone in the evolution of the Institute.
The new president, the Institute’s fourth, promised to serve it with all his strength and invited the community and the government to join the Institute to work together to face the challenges ahead in a new chapter of the Institute and Hong Kong’s education development.
HKIEd is actively expanding its education research and policy studies, as well as partnerships with the wider education community both local and overseas.
In one of its latest initiatives, HKIEd has identified potential collaborations with the Institute of Education, University of London, including a joint Doctor of Education programme, and various staff and student exchanges.
Following the ceremony, Professor Cheung, accompanied by the Institute’s senior faculty members, will participate in the American Educational Research Association Annual Meeting in New York, USA in a bid to expand HKIEd’s outreach in the international arena and attract talent. The meeting is expected to attract 16,000 scholars from across education research disciplines and fields.
