The Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd) strategic directions would help Hong Kong position itself as an Education hub, and nurture more creative human capital in the new Knowledge Era, its President told Executive Council visitors.
In a visit to HKIEd’s Taipo campus today (14 January 2008), six Non-Official Members of the Executive Council were briefed on the achievements of the Institute, the strategic directions of its Development Blueprint as well as its aspirations for a University Title.
The Executive Councillors were received by HKIEd’s Deputy Chairman, Mr Eddie Ng, its President Prof. Anthony B.L. Cheung together with senior management and faculty members. They were also shown around the campus by student representatives.
Prof Cheung told the visitors that HKIEd is fully committed to taking the lead in creative and innovative education, and promoting new pedagogy and curriculum reforms, as well as grooming the best teachers equipped with broad-based, multi-disciplinary knowledge and cross-cultural experience.
“We are also committed to conducting education research, policy studies and applied work, and to collaborate to building partnerships with other universities and schools. The results of the applied research would support teaching and learning within the classroom and for co-curricular activities.”
“All the work that we have undertaken and those in the pipeline are geared towards benefiting our future generations. Our pursuit for a University Title will allow us to create even greater value for our school system and enable Hong Kong to take a leading role in higher education in the Asia-Pacific Region,” Prof Cheung expounded.
Prof. Cheung said the Institute has been in fact a University without a University Title, having gained self-accreditation status in 2004, and subject to the same rigorous assessment in quality assurance, teaching, learning and research assessment review standards as applied to all universities funded by the University Grants Committee.
HKIEd graduates are preferred teachers in particular for the primary and pre-primary education sectors. 85 per cent of the academic staff are doctoral-degree holders.
