Five religious organisations made
donations amounting to $13 million in support of the
Centre for Religious and
Spirituality Education set up by the Hong Kong Institution
of Education (HKIEd) – the first of its kind in teacher
education institutions in Hong Kong.
The latest donations were made by the Hong Kong Buddhist
Association of $2 million and Sik Sik Yuen of $3 million,
both in support of the Centre to nurture all-rounded prospective
teachers.
Earlier on, the Centre has already received donations
from three other main religious organisations in Hong Kong
including Ching Chung Taoist Association, the Hong Kong
Catholic Diocese and Sheng Kung Hui. .
Ven. Kok Kwong, President of the Hong Kong Buddhist Association
led a delegation of six office bearers, and Mr. Hsu Show-hoo,
Chairman of the Sik Sik Yuen led a 27-member delegation
to the Institute and presented their donations last week.
HKIEd President Prof. Paul Morris expressed gratitude
to both groups and the other religious bodies for their
philanthropy and staunch support to the new initiative.
Prof. Morris said: “Since
the Institute made known our plan of setting up the Centre,
responses from the religious
community have been very positive. We are confident that
more affirmative replies to our appeal will come soon.”
Background Information of the HKIEd Centre for Religious
and Spirituality Education
The Centre will start to offer religious and spirituality
courses from September 2006 onwards, as part of the core
curriculum of the General Education in HKIEd’s
Bachelor of Education programmes. The elective courses will include the beliefs
of the major world religions represented in Hong Kong, as well as curriculum
and pedagogy for religious education across religions.
Further to the provision of recognised and accredited
courses on the religious and spirituality subjects, the
Centre will provide a broad base for disseminating research
work and endeavour to become a recognised centre of excellence
both locally and internationally.
