About 150 teaching professionals
from schools sponsored by organisations of the six major
religions in Hong Kong gathered at the Hong Kong Institute
of Education (HKIEd) campus today to discuss the development
of religious education in primary and secondary schools.
To better prepare for the delivery
of religious and spirituality education among prospective
teachers starting September
2006, the HKIEd has organised the seminar on “Religious
Education in Hong Kong Schools: A Sharing of Experience” today
for cross-religious exchanges.
Speakers attending the seminar are representing:- Catholic
Diocese of Hong Kong; Chinese Muslim Cultural and Fraternal
Association; Ching Chung Taoist Association; The Confucian
Academy; Hong Kong Buddhist Association; Hong Kong Sheng
Kung Hui; The Methodist Church, Hong Kong; and Sik Sik
Yuen.
They shared with about 150 principals and teachers the
curriculum on religious education, corresponding teacher
education, the challenges faced by religious education
under the new senior secondary system, as well as the experiences
and expectations of frontline teachers in implementing
religious education.
In welcoming the very “spiritual” group of
educators, HKIEd President Prof Paul Morris said at the
seminar that “the various religious bodies that run
schools in Hong Kong have been doing a great service to
their pupils by incorporating religious education in their
curriculum.”
“The effort and achievement of these religious
bodies have been the inspiration for our Institute’s
initiative to set up a Centre for Religious and Spirituality
Education so that we can contribute to this important area.
I am very glad to report that various religious bodies
have been very enthusiastic about the establishment of
this Centre at our Institute, and have been very generous
in offering us support both spiritually and financially,” said
Prof Morris.
To date, the HKIEd has netted $11 million donations for
the future five-year operation of the Centre, the first
of its kind in teacher education institutions in Hong Kong.
Ching Chung Taoist Association, Sik Sik Yuen and the Hong
Kong Catholic Diocese have donated $3 million each; while
Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui has donated $2 million.
The Centre will provide a wide selection of courses on
major religious beliefs, as well as curriculum and pedagogy
for religious education across religions to its full-time
Bachelor of Education students starting from September
this year.
