Cardinal Bishop Joseph Zen Visits HKIEd
Catholic Diocese Donation in Support of Religious and Spirituality Education

9 May 2006

Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun, SDB, Bishop of the Hong Kong Catholic Diocese today (9 May) shared his teaching experiences with colleagues of the Hong Kong Institution of Education (HKIEd).

Paying a visit to the HKIEd Tai Po campus, Cardinal Zen said clergymen are virtually also members of the “education profession”. He thus felt particularly close to teachers and the Institute, given that he himself has also been a teacher. During his early days with the Diocese, he has taught Mathematics, Latin and English in schools for a few years.

In today’s visit, Cardinal Zen represented the Diocese to present a $3-million cheque to the Institute in support of the establishment of the Centre for Religious and Spirituality Education – the first of its kind in teacher education institutions in Hong Kong. He expected HKIEd to apply its strengthens to nurture the virtue of Hong Kong students via religious and spirituality education, especially at the primary education level.

Rev. Edward Khong Kin-cheung, Procurator of the Hong Kong Catholic Diocese, and Ms Alice Woo Lo-ming, the Episcopal Delegate for Education, joined Cardinal Zen in today’s visit.

Background Information of the HKIEd Centre for Religious and Spirituality Education

The Centre will introduce religious and spirituality courses starting from September 2006, as part of the core curriculum of the General Education in HKIEd’s Bachelor of Education programmes. The elective courses will include the beliefs of the major world religions represented in Hong Kong, as well as curriculum and pedagogy for religious education across religions.

Further to the provision of recognised and accredited courses on the religious and spirituality subjects, the Centre will provide a broad base for disseminating research work and endeavour to become a recognised centre of excellence both locally and internationally.

To date, the HKIEd has netted $11 million donations from four main religious organisations. Ching Chung Taoist Association, Sik Sik Yuen and the Hong Kong Catholic Diocese have donated $3 million each; while Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui has donated $2 million.
