The Ching Chung Taoist
Association has donated $3 million to the Hong Kong Institution
of Education (HKIEd) in support of religious and spirituality
education.
Together with donations from other
major religious organizations, the HKIEd has attracted
up to date $11 million for the
establishment of the Centre for Religious and Spirituality
Education – the first of its kind in teacher education
institutions in Hong Kong.
Heads of Ching Chung Taoist Association, led by Chairman
Mr. Mak Chi-fee and Vice-chairmen Mr. Lam Chi-kin and Mr.
Leung Fat, visited HKIEd Tai Po campus today (7 April).
In today’s cheque presentation
ceremony, HKIEd Vice President (Academic) Professor Bernard
Luk expressed
sincere gratitude to Ching Chung Taoist Association and
other religious bodies for their enthusiastic support.
“We are very glad to have received this generous
support from Ching Chung Taoist Association. It will enable
the timely establishment of the Centre and the introduction
of religious and spirituality courses starting from September
2006, as part of the core curriculum of the General Education
in our Bachelor of Education programmes,” said Prof
Luk.
He is confident that “more
good news on the support from other religious bodies
will follow later.”
The proposed Centre will offer elective courses on the
beliefs of the major world religions represented in Hong
Kong, as well as curriculum and pedagogy for religious
education across religions.
Further to the provision of recognised and accredited
courses on the religious and spirituality subjects, the
Centre will provide a broad base for disseminating research
work and endeavour to become a recognised centre of excellence
both locally and internationally.
To date, the HKIEd has netted $11 million donations from
four main religious organisations. Ching Chung Taoist Association,
Sik Sik Yuen and the Hong Kong Catholic Diocese have donated
$3 million each; while Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui has donated
$2 million.
