Self Introduction

Dr. Cheng May Hung, May graduated from the University of Hong Kong with a Bachelor of Science degree, a Certificate of Education and a Master of Education degree. She obtained her PhD from the University of Waikato, New Zealand with a longitudinal study focusing on the professional development of primary science teachers in Hong Kong.

Dr. Cheng is currently Associate Professor, and Associate Dean (Programmes) of the Faculty of Languages, Arts and Sciences. She teachers under- and post-graduate classes in biology, science education, general studies, liberal studies and health education. She is Programme Leader of the Bachelor of Education (Primary) programme and she has been involved in teacher education since 1990. Before commencing at the HKIEd, she has taught biology at senior secondary levels. She has been appointed as a supervisor for students in the Master of Education programme at the South China Normal University and a supervisor for PhD students at the East China Normal University.

Dr. Cheng's main research areas are teacher education and development, science education and assessment for science learning. Apart from being principal investigator of a number of research projects funded by the Institute's research committee and the government's Education Bureau, she leads the Hong Kong Science team to participate in the five-year eleven-nation "Schools Around the WorldĦ¨ international project. She is on the editorial board of the Journal of Quality School Education and the online journal, Asia-Pacific Forum on Science Learning and Teaching. She has published four books in Chinese including, Teaching science with a constructivist view of learning - What does it mean in practice?, Developing alternative forms of students' work in science - Raising students' active learning ability, and a series of four educational CD-ROMs titled as Science teaching in Hong Kong - Exemplars of good teaching practices. She also serves curriculum development and examination committees held by the Curriculum Development Institute and the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority at senior secondary level. She has been invited to deliver seminars to school principals, and university faculties on science education locally, in the Mainland, Singapore and Taiwan.
