e-Learning Workshops for Students, 1st semester in 2009-10

To enhance your skills in knowledge construction, the Centre for Learning, Teaching and Technology (LTTC) will provide a series of e-Learning workshops in this semester. This series of workshops will help you develop and improve your learning skills and strategies such as collaborative learning, self-reflection, providing effective feedback, using mind mapping tools, and creating digital audio, video and images, etc. You will also be able to enhance your ICT competencies together with these learning strategies, thereby enriching your learning and facilitating your cognitive development. Please refer to the details of the workshops as follows:

Blackboard 9 Workshop (1 Hour)
The Blackboard e-Learning environment in our Institute will be upgraded from the current version to the latest version 9 in Semester 2 of this academic year beginning January 2010. New features of Bb9 include announcement/assignment alert, enhanced teacher-to-student and student-to-student communication tools (e.g. Blog, reflective journal and peer review), e-portfolio, enhanced assignment submission and so on. This workshop introduces the new features of the upgraded Bb9 environment and provides hands-on experience in its operation.

Introduction to Media Production Facilities (1 Hour)
LTTC manages the TV & Photo Studio and Media Production Rooms which are equipped with basic AV systems for the production of media assignments. The workshop will introduce the equipment inside the Studio and Production Rooms, ibooking procedure and e-support services.

Understanding your NetBook and OpenOffice (2 Hours)
The NetBook is specially designed for mobile learning with wireless Internet connection. The workshop will introduce you to the basic interface of a NetBook and WiFi connection. OpenOffice.org will also be introduced as an alternative to MS office for word processing and presentation. The good thing about OpenOffice is that it is FREE!

Web 2.0 for learning (2 Hours)
Web 2.0 technology opens a new horizon on individual learning, collaborative learning and social networking. This workshop will introduce you to the use of blogs for individual learning reflection and the use of wikis for collaborative writing and group project management. Finally, the concept of RSS (Really Simple Syndication) will be introduced which will assist you to subscribe to blogs into iGoogle or Facebook, thereby creating a platform for knowledge construction.

Digital Video Editing (2 Hours)
This workshop aims to provide the basic skills in digital video editing. The features of an easy-to-use editing software Ulead Video Studio will be introduced, covering the basic trimming technique, and adding of transitional effects, titles and background music. The video output formats for an online and mobile learning platform will also be demonstrated.

Multimedia production and Google applications with NetBook (2 Hours)
The workshop will introduce you to the basic multimedia production tools using the NetBook. In addition, various Google applications, including document uploading and sharing, will be demonstrated and their educational usage will be discussed.

Designing posters and flyers with freeware/online software (2 Hours)
The workshop aims to provide basic concepts in graphic design, digital image editing and vector graphics editing. Two popular freeware: Inkscape and Picnik will be introduced for the design production. Exemplar design and graphic works will be referenced and shared.

Hosting learning dialogues: Creating and managing a discussion forum (2 Hours)
This workshop aims at allowing the audience to subscribe to a free discussion forum on the Web. It also provides an opportunity for one to manage and engage peers/students in a discussion forum for learning and provides multiple opportunities for use in future teaching practices.

Enhancing learning and teaching with Mind Mapping (2 Hours)
Mind Mapping is used to generate, visualize, structure, and classify ideas, and is used as an aid for learning, brainstorming, memorising, visual thinking, and problem solving. This workshop aims to introduce the basic concept of Mind Mapping, and to demonstrate how to construct an idea/knowledge using a mind map. Some useful mind mapping software will also be introduced, with discussion on their application and relevance in learning and teaching.
