Information Technology Competency in Education

Prior to graduation all pre-service students must attain the Upper Intermediate Level (UIIT) of Information Technology Competency in Education (ITCE). In order to ensure that our students can attain this level, the Institute is committed to the preparation of all students, so that they are able to demonstrate competent usage of ICT in teaching and learning through various ITCE provisions in order to develop our students with confidence and creativity in the use of Information Communication and Technologies (ICT), and also the capacity to explore and experiment with the various ways that ICT can be applied in education. The Information Technology Competency in Education (ITCE) Instructors assist this process by teaching core competencies in the areas through various ITCE provisions for students who do not meet the required ITCE standard. Students can enroll the following face-to-face ITCE Workshops online at Easy Learning IT Empowering (ELITE) Web site (http://elite.ied.edu.hk).

The ITCE Workshops available are:

  • Multimedia Production I
  • Webpage Design I & II
  • Multimedia Production II
  • Spreadsheet Operation I & II

Students can also arrange with their ITCE Instructors for personal consultation to clarify tutorial and workshop content, in order to meet the required ITCE standards before graduation. These sessions provide students with an awareness of possible solutions for their learning and teaching issues, and enable them to enhance their skills in using technology in education.

An extensive package, known as the Easy Learning IT Empowering (ELITE) program, has been developed by the Institute to assist students to achieve ITCE standards. The program is a flexible combination of computer-based self-learning and online resources. Therefore, students can familiarise themselves through the ELITE Web site to enrich their ICT knowledge and skills and complete the computer-based tutorials available, and perform a series of self-assessment checks using the available ITCE checklist on the ELITE Web site.

Our ITCE Instructors are also responsible for assessing the ITCE levels of for different programmes at the Institute. Students are advised to complete a condensed self-assessment checklist to their ITCE Instructor, who will then advise them of any further competencies they need to satisfy and the means and methods of developing these additional competencies if necessary. Currently eight academic programmes are under the ITCE Portfolio system as the following:

  • Bachelor of Education (Honours) (Primary) (Four-year Full-time)
  • Bachelor of Education (Honours) (Music) - Primary (Four-year Full-time)
