Blended Learning

Blended Learning…

  • combines face-to-face classroom teaching with technology-based learning
  • increases flexibility in how, when & where students study
  • enriches teaching and learning experiences

Introduction

Following the implementation of the “3+3+4” academic structure and emergence of Information and Communication Technologies in education, academic staff continually faces the challenges of integrating different modes of delivery, models of teaching, and styles of learning through strategic and systematic use of technology, combined with the best features of face-to-face interaction. To enable and support the staff to meet these challenges, the Centre for Teaching, Learning & Technology (LTTC) promotes a flexible methodology of teaching and learning – Blended Learning – in order to enhance the professional development of the staff.

Blended Learning combines face-to-face classroom teaching with technology-based learning, and provides varied teaching opportunities to improve student learning and thereby increase flexibility in how, when and where students study. In the coming semester, the Centre for Teaching, Learning & Technology (LTTC) will provide a series of seminars/workshops for academic staff, with the aim of introducing and demonstrating the various methods through which technology can be incorporated in their current teaching practices.

After the seminars/workshops, academic and technological consultation and expertise will be provided by the Centre for Teaching, Learning & Technology (LTTC) staff. They will also work directly with other academic staff at module or programme levels, in order to aid and assist them to design and develop effective approaches to Blended Learning that are useful to both staff and students.

The key content of the seminars and workshops include:

  • Introducing the concept of Blended Learning.
  • Addressing strategies and providing examples for integrating the Blended Learning approach into current teaching and learning practices.
  • Demonstrating how technologies can be effectively deployed in Blended Learning practices.
  • A hands-on practice approach in applying Blackboard and Web2.0, etc. to enrich the quality of student learning through interactive learning activities beyond those attainable through face-to-face classroom interactions.
  • Utilizing technology to design assessment tasks.
  • Applying the Blended Learning approach for enabling the Assessment for Learning, Problem-based Learning and Self-directed Learning methodologies.
