Enhancements on Web Publishing to Internet/Intranet using MS FrontPage

Introduction

In order to provide a reliable, secure and efficient support on HKIEd Internet/Intranet, a new technology will be used in our Internet/Intranet infrastructure with effect from 9 Oct 2000. A new feature "Web Folder - FrontPage Publishing Support Web Server Extension" will then be supported on these two web servers (i.e. http://www.ied.edu.hk and http://intranet.ied.edu.hk) for the popular web authoring tools Microsoft FrontPage 98 & Microsoft FrontPage 2000. The enhancements allow our authorized colleagues (i.e. our departmental webmasters and web developers) to create and maintain their web pages more easily and more securely. Furthermore, some advanced web techniques and active components introduced by FrontPage Extension support (e.g. Hit Counter, Marquee and Banner Ad) can also be used in the web pages.

Features and Enhancements

With web authoring tools Microsoft FrontPage 98/2000, our authorized colleagues will be able to manage their Internet/Intranet web pages more easily without using FTP, though FTP is still supported on our web servers. In addition, your web pages and even your password could be encrypted and sent to our systems securely. You can also use some advanced web techniques and active components introduced by FrontPage Extension support. The following table gives some examples of these features that can be used in Microsoft FrontPage 2000.

Feature Description Example
Hit Counter Use the Hit Counter Properties dialog box to insert a hit counter on the active page in the FrontPage Editor. A hit counter is a numeric counter which displays the number of users who have visited your Web site. No. of Visitors: Hit Counter
Marquee
(work only in IE)
A marquee displays a scrolling text message. Create a marquee on a page to display a horizontally scrolling text message. You can format the font in a marquee to adjust font size, style, color, and character spacing. This is a marquee.
DHTML Effects
(work only in IE)
You can apply Dynamic HTML (DHTML) animation effects to just about anything on a page - text, paragraphs, pictures, buttons, marquees, and so on; and tie the effect to a trigger event, such as clicking a mouse, pointing a mouse, loading a page, and so on.

Please click here to see the animation effect

ActiveX Control
(work only in IE)
You can use the latest Microsoft ActiveX controls in your web to insert everything from calendars to stock tickers on your pages. Here we give an example of Windows Media Player ActiveX Control.
