We aim to provide a world-class programme for talented research students interested in pursuing a career as an active researcher, respected professor or leading educator with international standing. We have an excellent multi-disciplinary research environment for research students to receive top-class research training and develop their research capacity and profile.

We have the largest critical mass of experts in education and related areas in Hong Kong, including 400 academic and teaching staff. Among them, there are 34 chair professors and professors who are internationally renowned researchers or leaders in their specialized areas and provide world class supervision to our research students. They are also the mentors and role models for our early and mid-career researchers.

We also have a strong infrastructure for research development and capacity building. The three Faculties and thirteen Academic Departments constitute a multi-disciplinary academic structure for learning, teaching and research in education and related areas such as humanities, social sciences, languages and linguistics, health studies, and cultural and creative arts. In particular, we have five Institute-level Research Centres as the foci of cutting-edge research with impacts on theory building, practical innovation, professional improvement and policy formulation in the Asia-Pacific Region. In addition, there are nine Faculty Research Centres as our areas of strength for research and knowledge transfer in Hong Kong and the Region.

Every research student is affiliated to an academic department and a research centre such that his/her research capacity development can benefit from considerable exposure to the multi-disciplinary research activities and experiences locally and internationally. For example, the numerous research seminars, workshops and international conferences organized by the Centres and Departments throughout the year create very good opportunities for research students to broaden their knowledge horizons, academic perspectives, as well as international research networks. The research development of our students is supported and nurtured not only by their supervision panel but also by a team of active researchers in the research centre.

In our Institute, there are over 200 ongoing research projects in different areas of education and related disciplines, supported by various sources of external and internal funding. Among them, there are over 35 high level projects with international standing funded by the Research Grants Council, Hong Kong. These projects provide very fruitful opportunities for research students to participate in scholarly activities and share first-hand research experiences and insights that are crucial to the development of their own research at various international frontiers.

We are proud of our beautiful campus, which was gracefully and purpose built with nice and comfortable student hostels, a state-of-the-art library and an IT environment – facilities which are highly conducive to our RPg students' campus life and research development.

We warmly welcome talented research students to join our research community by applying for admission to our PhD and MPhil programmes. For details of the programmes and application, please refer to the information in this booklet or the web-site of our Graduate School.
