MEd Information Seminar |
A MEd Information Seminar was held on Saturday, 10 January 2009 at YMCA of Hong Kong. Prof. Bob Adamson, Director of Graduate Programmes and subject representatives of the 20 specializations turned up at the seminar to introduce the features and the new MEd curriculum structure to the prospective students. Participants had chances to raise questions and learn from the experiences of some recent MEd graduates. Participants generally found that the seminar was helpful for their planning for further studies.

EdD Information Seminar |
A EdD information seminar was held on Saturday, 10 January 2009 at YMCA of Hong Kong. The Director of Graduate Programmes and Area of Study Coordinators/representatives explained to participants about the features, the curriculum structure and admission requirements, etc. of the EdD programme. Two current EdD candidates were also invited to share their experience of studying in the programme with the participants.

MEd Programme Orientation |
The MEd programme admitted students in January for its first time in January 2009, hence a group of over 50 students joined the programme in the middle of an academic year. A MEd Programme Orientation specially arranged for this group of students was held on 3 January 2009 which included an introduction to the curriculum structure and programme requirements, an ITS workshop and a Library workshop.

Seminar: Social Forestry, Education and Participation in Thailand: Involving schools and communities in local change |
Prof. Christopher Wheeler from Michigan State University was invited to conduct a seminar on “Social Forestry, Education and Participation in Thailand: Involving schools and communities in local change” on 5 December 2008. Prof. Wheeler presented a successful case of school-community collaboration in addressing the problem of deforestation in northern Thailand. The seminar gave participants a good insight on the possible school-community collaboration and an innovative model of professional development for teachers.

EdD Seminar: Analyzing Qualitative Data to Influence Policy |
Prof. Christine Halse was invited to conduct another seminar on “Analyzing Qualitative Data to Influence Policy” on 27 November 2008. The seminar was open to the EdD teaching team and graduate students. In her presentation, Prof. Halse drew on a diverse series of qualitative curriculum and educational policy studies that she had conducted over the past 10 years. The focus of the presentation was on ‘a tempting tool-kit’: a series of strategies that illustrate how qualitative researchers can design research problems in new ways, use novel methods of analysis and creatively present research findings so that their work connects with and impacts on policy makers and educational policy. Participants particularly liked the real research examples and the pragmatic data analysis methods.

Academic Writing Workshop for Mainland Students |
To follow the practice of last year, an academic writing workshop was specially arranged for students from Mainland China. This year, Dr. Lee I Fang from the Department of Early Childhood Education was invited to conduct the workshop. The workshop successfully helped students bridging the gap between the format of academic writing in Mainland China and in Hong Kong.

EdD Seminar: Doctoral Supervision as Professional Work |
Prof. Christine Halse, Director of the Centre for Educational Research at the University of Western Sydney, was invited to conduct a seminar on “Doctoral Supervision as Profession Work” for our EdD teaching team on 20 November 2008. Drawing on an empirical, institutional study of doctoral advisors across five broad disciplines/fields and informed by the philosophy of Aristotle and Hannah Arendt, Prof. Halse, presented evidence for conceptualizing doctoral advising as a specific and highly specialized form of professional work that comprises five facets. Participants found the discussion on the five facets very useful which help them better prepared for taking up the role as doctoral supervisor.

Blackboard Workshop for MEd Students |
In order to cater the need of some students who want to know more about online learning management system – Blackboard, a Blackboard Workshop was held on 2 October 2008 for MEd students at Town Centre. The objectives of the workshop were to give students an introduction of the Blackboard module features and help them better prepare for engaging in online learning activities.

EdD Programme Orientation cum Scholarship Presentation |
On 6 September 2008, all new EdD candidates were invited to participate in the EdD Programme Orientation. The Director of Graduate Programmes and all Areas of Study Coordinators briefed candidates about the details of the curriculum structure and programme requirements, followed by ITS workshop, e-learning workshop, Library and CLE tours. During the Orientation, the EdD Scholarships 2008-09 were presented to the award recipients Mr. Ho Nang Kwok Orlando and Ms. Xia Beibei.

The MEd programme has recruited 46 students from Mainland this year, so a separated orientation session was organized for them on 4 September 2008. the Director of Graduate Programmes introduced the main features of the programme to students, and staff representatives from each specialization meet their students to address their individual needs and concerns.

MEd Programme Orientation cum MEd Awards Presentation |
All new MEd students were invited to participate in a Programme Orientation on 8 August 2008. The Orientation included an ITS workshop, a Library workshop, introduction to the curriculum structure and programme requirements by the Acting Director of Graduate Programmes and subject representatives of all specializations. Also, the Awards for Academic Excellence, the first of its kind in the MEd programme, were presented to the top nine graduates who got the highest overall programme GPA.

香港教育學院課程與教學系的訪問教授及現任國立台灣師範大學特殊教育學系的陳昭儀教授,於6月2日與任教本校碩士課程的同工分享台灣師範大學教育碩士課程的開設、實施與挑戰的經驗。陳教授以其任教的創造力發展碩士專班為例,詳細闡述有關招生、課程設計、課程目標、課程內容,教學方式、作業成果與評量,碩士論文指導等方面的具體情況。

MEd Teaching Team Forum |
A MEd Teaching Team Forum on Blended Learning was jointly organized by GPO, ITS and LTTC on 2 April 2008. Dr. Ong Ai Choo of LTTC, spoke on how blended learning could enhance teaching and learning outcomes. Mr. Victor Cheng of ITS, spoke on the recent developments in IT infrastructure that support blended learning. Mr. Elson Szeto of LTTC gave a brief account on the use of blended learning in other universities from his personal experience. Dr. Margaret Hui of C&I shared with colleagues her observations in a recent visit to the School of Web-based Education at South China Normal University. Prof. Andy Kirkpatrick demonstrated an example of his MEd module which adopted a simple version of blended learning. Prof. Michael Parsons, Visiting scholar of CAPE, shared with colleagues his experience of how to structure, organize and prepare for blended learning classes. Facilitated by the MEd Programme Coordinator, Dr. Grace Mak and Dr. Eugenia Ng of MSST, the forum was successfully organized and arrived at a conclusion that blended learning should be able to help MEd students learn more independently and effectively.

講者:香港教育學院副校長(學術)及首席副校長李榮安教授
李榮安教授在2月23日的研究課程事務處舉辦的公開講座中,從比較教育角度分析香港的教育改革,他以不同國家地方的例子和情況闡釋全球化與本土化的爭持和平衡。最後李教授和麥肖玲博士亦跟與會者分享前線教育工作者在建構香港校本改革中的智慧。與會者逾百人,包括本校研究課程學生、教職員及校外人士。

Pre-Lunar New Year Gathering |
GPO organized its first pre-Lunar New Year gathering with MEd and EdD students on 28 January 2008. Around 20 full-time MEd students and 2 EdD candidates celebrated the New Year festival together with the Dean of FPECE, Programme Coordinators, Subject Coordinators, Department and Unit Heads. Although only light drink and refreshments were served, the afternoon was filled with joy and happiness.

A EdD information seminar which was open to the public was held on 12 January 2008 at Prince Hotel, Tsimshatsui. The EdD Programme Coordinator, Area of Study Coordinators, and Prof. Magdalena Mok explained to participants about the curriculum structure and admission requirements, etc. of the EdD programme. Three current EdD candidates were also invited to share their experience of studying in the programme in the past few months.

Dr. Grace Mak, Director of Graduate Programmes and subject representatives of the 17 specializations were present at the seminar to present the most updated information of the MEd programme to the prospective applicants. Participants had chances to raise questions and learn from the experiences of two MEd graduates and one current MEd student. Participants found that the seminar was helpful for their planning for further studies.

Prof. Lynn Paine, an associate professor of teacher education, and an adjunct professor of sociology and women's studies at Michigan State University, was invited to share her experience in EdD supervision.

EdD Seminar: "How to handle the Nobel-prize syndrome and other cautionary tales" |
Prof. Arie Cohen was also invited to speak to HKIEd staff on how to handle the Nobel-prize syndrome and other cautionary tales on 4 December 2007. The seminar was part of a series of workshops/seminars that focused on supervisory techniques for future EdD supervisors.

EdD Seminar for EdD candidates: "How to develop ideas for your doctoral research and how to organise your literature" |
A EdD seminar conducted by Prof. Arie Cohen, School of Education of BAR-llan University, was organized on 24 November 2007 for EdD candidates. EdD candidates had a good opportunity to learn how to develop ideas for doctoral research and how to organize literature search in this early stage of their EdD study. Prof. Cohen presented a lot of practical tips and examples which the candidates found very useful.

MEd Teaching Team Forum |
After the MEd Programme has been running successfully for the third year, the MEd teaching team met in a forum to reflect upon their strengths and identify strategies for future development. Prof. Kerry Kennedy and Prof. Y C Cheng were invited to speak to the teaching team about the MEd in the context of HKIEd's future developments. Dr. Samuel Leong and Dr. Anissa Fung shared their experience and strategies in recruiting MEd students for the Creative Arts specialization. Prof. Lee Wing On also participated in the forum and shared his observations. With the collective wisdom, the forum was very fruitful as the team had generated a lot of valuable ideas for maintaining the academic quality, as well as strategies for survival for the MEd programme.

EdD Programme Seminar for MEd Graduates |
The Institute was planning to recruit the second batch of EdD candidates. Knowing that numerous MEd graduates of the Institute are interested to pursuit further studies with the Institute, GPO organized a EdD programme seminar on 3 November 2007 for the first batch of MEd graduates as well as final year MEd students. The seminar provided useful information for students to plan their study ahead.

Academic Writing Workshop for Mainland students |
To bridge the gap between the format of academic writing in Mainland China and in Hong Kong, the Director of Graduate Programmes conducted a tailor-made workshop of academic writing for Mainland students on 23 October 2007. Students benefited a lot from this extra tutorial session.

Meeting with Mainland students |
To understand better the need of the Mainland students, GPO invited all the 40 year one students from Mainland to attend a meeting with Dr. Grace Mak (Director of Graduate Programmes), Dr. Tam Cheung On (Deputy Head of CAPE) and Dr. Lai Kwok Hung (Senior Student Affairs Officer) on 2 October 2007. Students put forward the difficulties that they had encountered in the previous one month. After the meeting, GPO, SAO and the CAPE department took follow-up actions in response to students' concerns, hoping to provide the best support to Mainland students in adapting to the campus life.

It was the first seminar in a professional development programme for staff involved or interested in supervising EdD candidates. The primary aims of the seminar were:
- Provide practical knowledge about the structure of the EdD at HKIEd
- Familiarise participants with international trends and debates about the EdD
- Share the experience of experienced supervisors about some of the challenges of supervising EdD candidates and how these might be addressed; and to
- Establish a community of collegial, scholarly discussion about the EdD at HKIEd

Gathering of 1st Cohort MEd Management students |
