Abstract
Debates surrounding the promotion of more inclusive schooling for children and young people who have previously been marginalised have centred upon issues of human rights, school improvement and pedagogy. Within this debate policy makers, researchers and teachers have all expressed their views and have contributed to an increased understanding of those conditions which support the development of inclusive schools. More recently attention has been given to the views of young people and to approaches which encourage them to critique their own experiences of school. This seminar reports work from the Encouraging Voices Project (2003, 2004, 2006, 2008) which brought together researchers and young people to explore issues of inclusion and exclusion in schools in England and Ireland. The session will consider both the methodological and ethical challenges of presenting the authentic voices of young people as participants in research and the ways in which their views may be interpreted. Excerpts from interview data will be presented and discussed in relation to current inclusion research agendas.
