Programme Aims

The overall aim of this programme is to develop English teachers' capacity in implementing the NSS English Language curriculum in their own schools through building their knowledge and understanding of the curriculum..

Target Programme Participants

Course participants will be any secondary school teachers of English Language interested in the curriculum change. Priority will be given to teachers who have not previously attended similiar courses on NSS Understaing and Interpreting in Curriculum.

Overview of the Three-year Senior Secondary English Language Curriculum

  • Overview of the content and purpose of the compulsory and elective parts of the NSS curriculum.
  • Overview of the structure and central teaching and learning principles and how they serve the aims of the NSS curriculum.
  • Focusing on learning objectives of NSS

    General Considerations

  • Reflecting on own school context and culture
  • Reflecting on strengths and constraints of the teachers' own context;
  • Deepening the understaing of the interface and progression between junior and senior secondary schools;
  • Formulating the outcome-driven lesson structure: finding, developing and creating a lesson content appropriate to the objectives;
  • Considering the role of the professional teacher in guiding students to independent learning.

Integrating the Compulsory Parts in the NSS English Language Curriculum: Learning and teaching approaches

  • Reviewing the KLA curriculum principles for English Language
  • Facilitating collaboration within the English Language Education KLA and developing cross-KLA links;
  • Considering essential learning and teaching approaches/strategies as integral to a coherent curriculum approach
  • Considering curriculum planning and design
  • Introducing, considering and evaluating a range of teaching resource strategies

Integrating the Elective Parts in the NSS English Language Curriculum: Planning for the Elective Part and developing elective modules

  • Purposes and principles of the Elective Part;
  • Developing elective modules, including both language arts and non-language arts electives;
  • Facilitating smooth progression
  • Building in flexibility
  • Review key curriculum planning strategies
  • Action planning

Enhancing the interface with the Junior Secondary English Language Curriculum

  • Principles of inclusion and influences of student diversity on learning; considering activity design; community; including classroom, learning culture; and resources;
  • Elaboration of pedagogical practices designed to enhance inclusion of diversity
  • Curriculum planning strategies that encourage flexibility and innovation in curriculum planning
  • Managing time allocation;
  • Monitoring and facilitating student progression;
  • Understanding roles of various curriculum leaders and coordinating staff development activities;
  • Promoting and integrating elements of independent language learning

School-based assessment

  • Introduction to school-based assessment and SBA in the 2007 HKCE English Examination;
  • Relating internal and formative assessment practices to curriculum aims and rationale: implications for curriculum planning;
  • Assessment for teaching and learning;
  • Designing effective strategies and tasks to enhance learning and teaching;
  • Strategies for capitalizing on the leadership role of panel chair persons.

Action planning : Consolidate and present model of a coherent, school-based NSS English Language curriculum guide, focused on identified needs evaluation of individual teachers' schools.

A programme option consists of four three-hour sessions (a total of 12 hours). A Certificate of Attendance will be awarded to participants who attend three or more sessions and fulfill the programme requirements.

Programme Requirements

Participants will be required to submit an action plan 4 weeks after the programme is completed. They will identify an area of interest for the development and implementation of the NSS English Language curriculum. Detailed guidelines about the action plan will be provided during the programme.

Participants will be expected to have at least 85% attendance (4 sessions).

A certificate of attendance will be awarded to participants who fulfill the above programme requirements.

Special Arrangements for Bad Weather

(a) A session in the morning will be cancelled when Typhoon Signal No. 8 or above is hoisted or Black Rainstorm Warning Signal is issued at or after 6:30am.

(b) A session in the afternoon will be resumed when Black Rainstorm Warning Signal or Typhoon Signal No.8 or above is cancelled at or before 11:30am. Otherwise, the session will continue to be cancelled.

Application Procedures

Enrolment for the programme will be handled on a first-come-first-served basis. However, we will try to include teachers from as many different schools as possible. Completed nomination form should be returned to us by post (The Course Coordinator, NSS(ET) Programme, B4-1/F-49, Department of English, The Hong Kong Institute of Education, 10 Lo Ping Road, Tai Po, New Territories, Hong Kong) or by fax (+852 2948 7270) on or before 16 July 2010 . Successful applicants will be informed via email on or before 19 July 2010.
