Programme Aims

The overall aim of this programme is to enhance teachers' knowledge and skills in curriculum change and leadership, task-based learning, teaching and assessment, as well as school-based curriculum development with reference to the central English Language curriculum, so that teachers can effectively perform a leadership role in developing and implementing an effective English Language curriculum in their own schools.

Target Programme Participants

Course participants will be primary school teachers of English Language interested in being empowered to become curriculum change agents or leaders. Priority will be given to serving or designate Panel Chairpersons/Coordinators of English Language at primary level.

Curriculum change and leadership

  • Curriculum development and change at the system and school levels
  • School practitioners as curriculum leaders: Curriculum leadership, management, supervision and evaluation
  • School-based curriculum development: models and processes
  • School-based curriculum development: Formulating a curriculum blueprint
    • Identify areas/focuses in the English Language Education Curriculum Framework for school-based curriculum development
    • Devise an action plan for development and implementation of a school-based English Language curriculum
  • Practical examples of school-based curriculum development: Case studies and/or Guest speaker

Workshop task: Developing a school-based curriculum development plan ( 1 ): Establish a vision for English teaching

School-based curriculum development

  • Main features of the English Language Education Curriculum Framework: directions for English language teaching and implications for school practitioners
  • Devising a task-based language curriculum: principles for teaching, learning and assessment
  • Revisiting the place of grammar in task-based learning: Addressing form, meaning and use in language teaching
  • Task-based curriculum design:
    • Specify learning targets in the three strands of language use
    • Select and organize exercises/tasks/projects to achieve learning targets identified in the three strands of language use
    • Write units of work

Developing instructional materials for task-based teaching, learning and assessment

  • Features of tasks or projects that promote the integrative use of knowledge and skills, development of language learning strategies, generic skills and attitudes conducive to independent, lifelong learning
  • Use of various materials/activities for different learning purposes
  • How to select, adapt, and develop tasks/projects to achieve the learning targets identified

Using language arts resource materials in the context of task-based learning

  • Using a wide range of resource materials to promote pleasurable language learning e.g. various text types - poems, plays, short stories, songs, cartoons, and multi-media resource materials – audio CDs, CD-ROMs, VCDs, Internet resources
  • How to use different resource materials to promote interactive language learning, critical thinking, creativity and cultural awareness
  • Developing learning activities using language arts resource materials
  • Promoting a reading culture in schools

Workshop task: Developing a school-based curriculum development plan (4): Using language arts resource materials for instructional purposes

Task-based learning, teaching and assessment

  • Revisiting the learning, teaching and assessment cycle
  • Using effective assessment tasks to enhance learning and teaching
  • Using formative and summative assessment
  • Establishing criteria for task-based assessment
  • How to capitalize on the leadership role of a panel chairperson in facilitating the planning and implementation of the school-based English Language curriculum
Workshop task: Developing a school-based curriculum development plan (5): Integrating various strategies for curriculum development

Programme Schedule

Please refer to the following Schedule of Programme Options for details of the five programme options to be conducted during April to July 2007.

A programme option consists of five three-hour sessions (a total of 15 hours). A Certificate of Attendance will be awarded to participants who attend four or more sessions and fulfill the programme requirements.

Programme Requirements

Participants will be required to submit an action plan 2 weeks after the programme is completed. They will identify an area of interest for the development and implementation of a school-based English Language curriculum. Detailed guidelines about the action plan will be provided during the programme.

Participants will be expected to attend at least four sessions of the programme.

A certificate of attendance will be awarded to participants who fulfill the above programme requirements.

Application Procedures

Enrolment for the programme will be handled on a first-come-first-served basis. However, we will try to include teachers from as many different schools as possible. Completed nomination forms should be returned to us by post ( The Course Coordinator, Curriculum Leadership Course, B4-1/F-49, Department of English, The Hong Kong Institute of Education, 10 Lo Ping Road, Tai Po, New Territories, Hong Kong) or by fax (2948-7270) on or before 9 March 2007. Successful applicants will be informed through their Headmasters/Headmistresses on or before 31 March 2007.
