Quality Assurance

Teaching and Learning Quality Assurance

The English Department places great importance on the quality of teaching and learning. Lecturers are expected to model approaches which are relevant to the student-teachers' own teaching contexts, and the learning activities encourage dialogue and collaboration, reflection, critical thinking and independence.

The Department Quality Assurance Committee (DQAC) promotes and ensures quality teaching and learning within the Department's ambit of work. It oversees the mechanisms and the operation of the support structures for teaching and learning effectiveness, including guidelines for programme and module reviews; evaluation procedures; production of generic guidelines for assessment; the monitoring of teaching development grants; and a peer observation and review scheme to foster collegial exchanges and the sharing of good teaching practices.

Language Proficiency

All pre-service Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) and Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) programmes operate at the level of the Hong Kong Government English Language Proficiency Requirement (LPR). During the module of their programme, B.Ed students are required to demonstrate that they are able to meet this requirement in terms of speaking, listening, reading, writing and classroom language. PGDE students may be exempted from the full LPR if they have a relevant first degree, but are still required to demonstrate adequate proficiency in classroom language and it should be noted that the LPR is applied to the assessment of all assignments. Students who find difficulty in meeting these requirements are able to avail themselves of language enhancement support provided by the Department and the Centre for Language in Education
