Endowed Chairs Scheme

In June 2009, the Council of the Hong Kong Institute of Education approved the launch of an “Endowed Chairs Scheme”, with a view to attracting and supporting eminent professors with academic and research expertise in a number of specialised fields of Education and related disciplines. This is in line with the good practice of some local and overseas universities in introducing prestigious or “distinction” titles to its Chair Professors to recognise their achievements and/or contributions to the institution. The Scheme will also help promote academic advancement in our distinguished areas.

An Endowed Chair can be conferred to a serving or newly recruited Chair Professor for a prescribed period (from 3 to 5 years) and may be extended/renewed upon successful review. An Endowed Chairs Advisory Committee comprising senior academics and a lay Council Member nominates candidates for such conferment. Apart from receiving the academic honour, an Endowed Chair Professor will be provided with a research stipend to support research and research-related activities within the identified discipline/specialty (e.g. engaging research staff, setting up laboratory and equipment, and organising conferences), such stipend being funded by the endowment.
