When visiting other universities locally or overseas, you might want to access the wireless network with your notebook. Many institutes require visitors/guests to apply for an account and password to access their wireless network. However, if the institutes have joined the Eduroam initiative or you find the Eduroam logo around, you might use your own account and password to access their wireless network. As the users are using their own account and password, it will save a lot of administrative overhead and make wireless LAN for guests and visitors more accessible. Eduroam (education roaming) is a location independent wireless network which allows members of participant institutions to use their unique credentials to gain access to wireless network at their home institution or a visited institution. Eduroam has a large number of members all over the world, mostly in Europe and Asia Pacific, including institutions in Hong Kong, Australia, United Kingdom, France and Germany etc. In Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, The Open University of Hong Kong, The University of Hong Kong and HKIEd are members of the Eduroam.
Using eduroam service at HKIEd (for visitors and guests)The wireless infrastructure at HKIEd support IEEE 802.11 a/b/g standards. Data encryption is enforced for data transmission over the air to ensure data security using WPA. Members of participant institutions can connect to eduroam at HKIEd with any Wi-Fi device (e.g. PDA, Notebook) that support these standards.
Configurations for setting up wireless network profile:
Detailed procedures on setting up a notebook using WPA can be found at Wireless Network Connection for staff and students through WPA/WPA2. For any queries about using the service or if you need further assistance, please contact ITS Help Desk.
