By the early 21st century, the Department of Early Childhood Education will be one of the leading Early Childhood Teacher Education units in the Asia Pacific Region, best known for its commitment to raising the status and quality of early childhood education in Hong Kong. We will provide a creative and dynamic environment for learning and research. We will nurture knowledgeable, caring and responsible early childhood education professionals who are able to excite the interest of each and every child. As they and the children under their care experience the sheer joy of learning, all dimensions of their potential will blossom. A culture of lifelong learning will become a reality.

To achieve our Vision of “Optimizing each child's potential through the shared joy of learning and teaching”, the Department will

• prepare early childhood practitioners for the profession and to support them in lifelong learning and professional development;

• undertake applied research and development projects that focus on professional knowledge and innovation in early childhood education;

• collaborate with early childhood education institutions and other organizations, locally and internationally to promote professionalism and quality early childhood education; and

• contribute to the formulation and development of policies in early childhood education in Hong Kong.
