01. What are the General Entrance Requirements for Non-JUPAS applicants?
Local and non-local applicants who are applying for admission on the strength of qualifications other than the HKALE results are welcome to apply for our programmes through the Non-JUPAS route. 02. What are the language requirements for Non-JUPAS applicants?
Non-JUPAS applicants are required to demonstrate a satisfactory level of proficiency in English and Chinese languages. However, applicants applying for English major programmes will be exempted from the Chinese Language requirements. We accept the following English Language tests and scores as fulfillment of the Institute's English language requirement:
Non-JUPAS applicants who intend to apply for programmes other than the Bachelor of Education (English Language) will be considered to have fulfilled the Chinese Language requirement if they obtain/have obtained:
03. Can I apply for admission if I am not a native speaker of Chinese or do not fulfill the Chinese Language requirement of the Institute?
If you are not a Chinese native speaker and have no knowledge in Chinese Language, you can apply for the BEd (English Language) programmes which do not require prior knowledge in Chinese. If you apply for other programmes which will be conducted in both Chinese and English, we require all applicants to have an acceptable Chinese Language proficiency. Students need to attend and pass a Chinese Language Test administered by the Institute. 04. Is there any quota for Non-JUPAS applicants?
No, we consider the admissibility of all Non-JUPAS candidates on a merit basis. In 2008/09, around 30% of entrants are Non-JUPAS applicants. 05. Are there any special considerations for mature applicants?
We work in tandem with the Government in promoting a flexible approach to the development of multiple forms of intelligence, lifelong and life-wide learning. We therefore welcome applications from out-of-school candidates aged 25 or above (on or before 31 August 2009) with specific talents or achievements and a wealth of experience. Aspiring applicants with a serious commitment to teaching are especially welcome. They may be exempted from the entrance requirements if they can demonstrate their suitability and capability to pursue the programmes successfully. 06. I am currently enrolled in a full-time bachelor's degree programme in another UGC funded institution. Will the Institute accept my application?
Applications from current students of full-time or sandwich bachelor's degree programmes of UGC funded institutions* are normally not accepted except under the following circumstances:
07. I am a first year student of an associate degree programme. Do I need to achieve a particular result in my studies to be considered by the Institute?
Normally, you need to achieve a GPA of 3.0 or above in the first year of your AD study to be eligible for further consideration by the Institute. 08. I am a final year student of a sub-degree programme. Can I apply for advanced year entry via your "Year 2 Direct Admission Scheme?
The Institute has set aside some Year-2 places for direct admission of sub-degree (i.e. Associate Degree or Higher Diploma) graduates. If you are a final-year student of such a programme, you are also welcome to apply and your applications will be considered subject to your successful completion of the programme and a good GPA. Once selected, you will enrol in Year 2 of the programme concerned and are expected to complete your undergraduate studies in 3 years, subject to availability of modules. To achieve the best learning outcome, you may be required to study additional modules so as to meet the curriculum requirements. If you are deemed not eligible for direct entry to Year 2, you will still be considered under the regular route for entry to Year 1 of your chosen programme(s). 09. Should I be regarded as a local applicant or a non-local applicant?
If you are required to obtain a student visa/entry permit issued by the Director of Immigration in order to study in Hong Kong, you are regarded as a non-local applicant. 10. What are the estimated expenses for a non-local student studying in the Institute per year?
The tuition fee for the 2009/10 academic year is tentatively HK$75,000 per year. Hostel fee is around HK$9,500 (for 10-month accommodation) and other general expenses cost around HK$30,000. To sum up, the estimated expenses studying in the Institute per year are around HK$115,000. 11. How can I apply for a student visa?
Non-local students must obtain a student visa in order to study here. Our International Office (IO) and Mainland Development Office (MDO) will render assistance to non-local students in their visa application.
