Programme Aims
This programme is aimed at providing students with a wide range of knowledge, concepts and applications of information and communication technology to develop problem-solving skills using Information and Communication Technology (ICT). It also provides students with opportunities to appreciate the impact of ICT on knowledge-based society, and equips students with pedagogical knowledge, subject knowledge, values, skills and practice essential to teach ICT. On completion of the programme, students are expected to be able to:
- demonstrate understanding of basic concepts in major areas of ICT and use a range of applications software to support information processing and problem-solving;
- demonstrate an understanding of methods for analysing problems, and planning and implementing solutions using ICT;
- realise the social, ethical and legal issues pertaining to the use of ICT and appreciate how information literacy and the sharing of knowledge using ICT influence decision-making and shape our society; and
- learn to connect ICT knowledge to the teaching of ICT and develop approaches to help students to learn ICT in exciting and effective ways.

Major
The curriculum covers a wide range of courses which enable students to enhance their knowledge, concepts and applications of ICT. Through the diverse modes of inquiry-based learning, e-learning and problem-based learning, the courses do not only equip students with the relevant subject knowledge, but also the pedagogical knowledge, values, skills and practice which are vital to the teaching of ICT in secondary schools.

Education Studies
Education Studies provide opportunities for interdisciplinary inquiry related to teaching and learning. Students will study school education from psychological, sociological, philosophical and practical perspectives. This will provide the basis for developing skills of critical thinking, problem solving and creativity that can be applied to classroom practice. It will enable students to appreciate the professional role of teachers, the importance of developing appropriate skills, values and attitudes that can enhance student learning and the need for commitment to lifelong professional learning. As a result, graduates will become caring and competent beginning teachers with intellectual enthusiasm, social commitment and global awareness.

General Education
The General Education courses divide into three developmental stages.
They are 1. Foundation, 2. Breadth and 3. Consolidation.
| 1. |
Foundation
Students will take a two-semester Foundation course in their first year of study at HKIEd. The course lectures are delivered by senior academics of the institute. They will share with students the knowledge and academic pursuits which most inspire them. In addition to the lectures, students will have the opportunity to conduct in-depth discussions in regard to the lecture topics in small-class tutorials.

Breadth
Students will proceed to the Breadth stage after they finish the Foundation. The Breadth area aims at broadening students’ intellectual horizons. Students will choose four courses from a wide range of courses from three different strands. They are (i) S1- Persons, Interpretations, Perspectives; (ii) S2- Community, Society, Culture; (iii) S3- Nature, Science, Technology.

Consolidation
The Consolidation course provides an opportunity for students to reflect on the significance of their undergraduate education, and project their own future goals and careers. The material for the Consolidation course will be stored electronically, making it possible for students to share their work with peers, parents and future employers, etc. |

Honours Project
The Honours Project has two courses:
- Honours Project I: Introduction to Research Methods
- Honours Project II: A one-year project usually to be conducted in the final year. Students can choose their topic from either their Major, Minor, Education Studies or General Education.

Field Experience
Students will be placed in schools which are important sites for learning to teach and where they will interpret, generate, interact and experiment with theory:

Start by visiting various educational institutions to broaden student teacher’s understanding of the local educational scene. |

Attend a 3 cp semester-based course on Learning Study to gain experience in lesson preparation/ school activities

Language Enhancement
Students take two English Language Proficiency courses in Year 1 as part of the English language enhancement programme. These two courses will equip students with academic literacy and writing skills essential to their study at tertiary level. They will also lay the foundation for students to learn English independently in subsequent years through their participation in self-access learning activities, blended learning, and optional language enhancement courses appropriate to their level and developmental needs. |

Co-curricular Learning
Under the Total Learning Experience framework, the Institute will offer Co-curricular Learning (CL) courses to all undergraduate students from 2012-13 academic year onwards. The CL courses are aiming at broadening the mind and horizon of the students, and extending students’ learning experience beyond the traditional classroom-based curriculum through including component of experience-based activities, within but not limited to the following areas:
1. Personal growth and life skills enhancement
2. Social-cultural engagement
3. Spiritual and mental well-being
4. Community participation
5. Career well-being
6. Physical well-being
Some examples of the experience-based activities include participating in work internship, community service projects, cultural appreciation, art experience, healthy lifestyle activities and other variety of activities within and outside the campus, etc.
Each undergraduate student is required to take one CL course, which contains three credit points, during the whole period of study in the Institute. |

Career Prospects/Professional Qualifications
Their in-depth academic and professional knowledge confer graduates of the programme with excellent career prospects. They will possess a Registered Teacher Status in Hong Kong and are ready to become fully qualified teachers in local secondary schools. In addition to the professional teaching career, graduates will possess the academic knowledge and intellectual skills to embark on a wide variety of other relevant jobs in the government sector, non-government organizations, commercial organizations, publishing sector, etc. |
