Programme Aims
This programme aims to prepare outstanding primary school teachers who:
- have a positive professional attitude;

Education Studies
Education Studies provide opportunities for interdisciplinary inquiry related to teaching and learning. Students will study school education from psychological, sociological, philosophical and practical perspectives. This will provide the basis for developing skills of critical thinking, problem solving and creativity that can be applied to classroom practice. It will enable students to appreciate the professional role of teachers, the importance of developing appropriate skills, values and attitudes that can enhance student learning and the need for commitment to lifelong professional learning. As a result, graduates will become caring and competent beginning teachers with intellectual enthusiasm, social commitment and global awareness. |

Complementary Studies
This domain consists of English Language Proficiency, an Honours Project and a Second Teaching Subject.

English Language Proficiency
Students take two English Language Proficiency courses in Year 1 as part of the English language enhancement programme. These two courses will equip students with academic literacy and writing skills essential to their study at tertiary level. They will also lay the foundation for students to learn English independently in subsequent years through their participation in self-access learning activities, blended learning, and optional language enhancement courses appropriate to their level and developmental needs.

Honours Project
The Honours Project comprises two components:
- Introduction to research methods in Year 3
- A one-year project in Year 4
Students
can propose a project area related to their Discipline Studies, Education Studies, General Education or Second Teaching Subject.

Second Teaching Subject
Most primary school teachers have to teach more than one subject. Students are therefore encouraged to take a Second Teaching Subject, which comprises content knowledge, discipline-based Education Studies and supervised block practice. At the end of Year 1, students can choose to take a Second Teaching Subject from the following:
- General Studies
- Inclusive Education
- Information Technology
- Mathematics
- Music
- Physical Education
- Putonghua
- Visual Arts
Alternatively,
students are free to take courses from Discipline Studies, Education Studies, General Education or Complementary Studies.

General Education

Field Experience
Students are placed in schools, which are important sites for learning to teach and where they will interpret, generate, interact and experiment with theory:

Career Prospects/Professional Qualifications
Their in-depth academic and professional knowledge confers graduates of the programme with excellent career prospects. They will possess a Registered Teacher Status in Hong Kong and are ready to become fully qualified teachers in local primary schools. In addition to the professional teaching career, graduates will have possessed the academic knowledge and intellectual skills necessary to embark on a wide variety of other careers, such as civil service, news organisations, publishing houses, etc.

Bachelor of Education (Honours) (Primary) Programme
General Studies Major
Programme Code: JA8234
General Studies is a very important subject in Hong Kong primary schools, with most primary school teachers required to teach this subject. It is also an important vehicle for Civic, Moral and Sex Education. At present, the Institute is the major provider of a full-time degree programme aimed at training prospective General Studies teachers for primary schools.
Taught as an integrated subject, this major aims to prepare outstanding primary school teachers who:
- possess the generic skills (e.g., problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, study skills, communications, information technology, etc.) that are essential for learning in the Information Era and for making sense of social and environmental issues;
- are well-acquainted with the spirit and methods of inquiry;
- are well-equipped with the social and scientific inquiry skills that come into play in the teaching and learning of General Studies;
- have the competence to ride the tide of the new curriculum reforms; and
- are able to play a significant role in curriculum development in the school context.

Bachelor of Education (Honours) (Primary) Programme
Mathematics Major

Mathematics is one of the three core subjects in Hong Kong's primary schools. At present, the Institute is the major provider of a full-time degree programme for training prospective Mathematics teachers for primary schools.
This major aims to assist students in enhancing their mathematical knowledge and learning how to help others to achieve an understanding of and develop a passion for this fascinating subject. Students are trained to become confident and competent Mathematics teachers who can excite the learning interest of pupils and make mathematics lively and relevant to their pupils' lives. We welcome students who are mathematically gifted, inquisitive and highly motivated by mathematics.
Our Features
This major allows students to:
- understand numbers, geometry, measurement, probability and other mathematical concepts;
- develop problem-solving skills and learn how to use technology in teaching mathematics;
- learn to connect mathematical knowledge to the teaching of mathematics; and
- develop approaches for helping pupils learn mathematics in exciting and effective ways.

Student Activities
- participating in immersion or exchange activities;
- organising local and international mathematics competitions for primary and secondary schools;
- publishing a mathematics education journal for students and schools in Hong Kong; and
- organising and attending talks on mathematics education for teachers, staff and students.
