Programme Code: JA8337

Programme Aims

This programme aims to prepare outstanding Music teachers for both primary and secondary schools who:

  • demonstrate a solid foundation in musical skills, related academic competencies, and music teaching practices to meet their future teaching needs;
  • strive for excellence and are committed to effecting innovative change in music education in Hong Kong;
  • demonstrate a passion to learn music and critically evaluate policies and practices related to music education and student learning;
  • work collaboratively with students, colleagues, school administrators and other professionals towards the well-being and all-round development of students; and
  • are committed to lifelong learning and to upgrade themselves professionally.

Despite its training at both primary and secondary levels, students of the programme need to focus their study at a particular level during their course of study subject to the quotas of the respective school levels as decided by the Institute as well as the projected demand of teachers at the two levels. Students will need to indicate their focus at the time of admission.

Programme Structure

Major

This programme equips students to be a competent, versatile and creative music teacher with a firm foundation in musical understanding and professional practices to meet their future professional needs in both primary and secondary schools. The curriculum covers four areas: Music History, Theory and Composition, Performance, and Music Education. Whilst students can further enhance their first instrument during your studies, the programme also facilitates students’ learning of a second instrument. Further, an emphasis is laid on learning through participating in various performing groups, music workshops and master classes.

Education Studies

Education Studies provide opportunities for interdisciplinary inquiry related to teaching and learning. Students will study school education from psychological, sociological, philosophical and practical perspectives. This will provide the basis for developing skills of critical thinking, problem solving and creativity that can be applied to classroom practice. It will enable students to appreciate the professional role of teachers, the importance of developing appropriate skills, values and attitudes that can enhance student learning and the need for commitment to lifelong professional learning. As a result, graduates will become caring and competent beginning teachers with intellectual enthusiasm, social commitment and global awareness.

Language Enhancement

Students take two English Language Proficiency courses in Year 1 as part of the English language enhancement programme. These two courses will equip students with academic literacy and writing skills essential to their study at tertiary level.
