The Bachelor of Education (Honours) (English Language) programme has two streams. One stream focuses on primary teaching and the other on secondary teaching. Although the two streams have a considerable number of elements in common, each is treated as an independent choice for the purpose of admission. |
Programme Aims
English is a very important subject in Hong Kong primary and secondary schools. Students of this programme have the opportunity to develop knowledge of English and different methods of teaching English as a second language. The programme is highly practical, requiring students to use English for a variety of academic and professional purposes throughout their four years of study. This programme aims to prepare qualified primary/secondary school teachers of English who:
- have a high level of proficiency in English by fulfilling the language exit requirement as stipulated in the related Programme Handbook;
- have in-depth knowledge of the English language;
- are able to help students in both primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong to learn English as a second language effectively;
- have lifelong learning skills and are able to appreciate moral, social and cultural values;
- can work collaboratively with students, parents, colleagues, school administrators and other professionals; and
- understand education issues of Hong Kong and will react to educational innovations positively.

Programme Structure

English Major
In this domain, students study the English language system (e.g., the English pronunciation system, formation of words, English grammar, etc.), language use in society, how people learn languages, the English language curriculum in Hong Kong, English language teaching skills, literature and drama, etc.
To support the English language development of every student, he or she will:
- be assigned a personal tutor;
- undertake a minimum of 138 hours of English language enhancement in Year 1 and 2;
- study in a university in an English-speaking country in the summer after Year 2 (max. 10 weeks);
- study courses with specific objectives for language improvement; and
- with identified language needs, be referred to specialists for intensive language development.

Education Studies
In this domain, students study the psychological, social, theoretical and practical perspectives of education, which are important for all teachers. They will explore various issues in relation to teaching and learning. |

Complementary Studies
In this domain, students study more about English language teaching and learning. They will also conduct a project in an area of interest to them. |

Students can choose from a wide selection of General Education courses in the following areas to enhance their whole person development.

Field Experience
Students observe classes and practise teaching in primary/secondary schools to try out what they have learnt:

Start by observing classes in various education settings |

Attend a school attachment for 1 intensive week in a local school |

Conduct the first block teaching practice for 6 weeks |

Conduct the second block teaching practice for 8 weeks |

Immersion Programme (Summer after Year 2)
The Immersion Programme is a compulsory part of the programme and students must participate and meet the requirement of the programme successfully in order to graduate. In this programme, they will:
- live in an English-speaking country (probably Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States or Canada) and study at a university there for a maximum of 10 weeks;
- live with a local family;
- enhance their English language proficiency;
- learn more about the English language, English-speaking cultures, and other education systems and widen their horizons; and
- increase their general confidence and develop a wider worldview.

Career Prospects/Professional Qualifications
As graduate teachers majoring in English with in-depth academic and professional knowledge, graduates of the programme will have excellent career prospects. They will become fully qualified teachers of English who can teach in both local primary and secondary schools with the following skills and qualifications.
- Registered Teacher Status in Hong Kong;
- Very high English language proficiency, with eligibility to apply for exemption from the LPATE; and
- Ability to help students learn English as a second language effectively in Hong Kong primary and secondary schools.
