Chinese Major
Programme Code: JA8600
English Major
Programme Code: JA8612

The Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Language Studies programme has two Major tracks: Chinese and English. Although the two Major tracks share six common core courses (18 credits), each Major track is treated as an independent choice for admission purposes.

Programme Aims

If you are interested in this programme, you should be ready to develop your ability to use both Chinese and English whilst enhancing your understanding of the cultures rooted in these languages and the societies where they are used. You will also develop your trilingual proficiency in Cantonese, English and Putonghua by majoring in Chinese or English. If you major in Chinese, you will specialise in Chinese (Language, Literature, and Culture & Communication) but must also deepen your knowledge of English. Similarly, if you major in English, you will specialise in English (Language Studies, Literatures in English, and Language and Society) but will also develop your knowledge of Chinese language and culture. Whichever Major track you choose, you will learn to use Putonghua, Cantonese and English as the context demands, sometimes switching among all three. To achieve this, the programme helps you to operate across the different cultures in which these languages are used. It also develops your research skills and prepares you for a future where you need to continually sharpen and update your knowledge of Chinese and English in the workplace and beyond.

English Major
Programme Code: JA8612

The English Major track of the BA (Lang Studies) programme aims to graduate students who are critical thinkers equipped with analytical skills to learn from varied social and situated contexts, and who have developed a global world view based upon a heightened level of cross-cultural awareness and intercultural sensitivity. Our English majors will also be reflective learners and as such should become acutely aware of the need for life-long learning in a globally dynamic multilingual and multi-cultural environment. At the same time, they will develop a fairly high level of biliteracy in Chinese and English, and trilingualism in Cantonese, English and Putonghua. Upon graduation, BA (Lang Studies) English majors will be able to demonstrate a firm grasp of the most important patterns of linguistic and sociolinguistic variation in major varieties of English in Asia and other parts of the world, and communicate effectively with speakers of English as a second or foreign language from non-Chinese backgrounds.

The English Major curriculum is structured according to three topical areas: English Language Studies, Literatures in English, and Language and Society. 18 of the 99 credits consist of Common Core courses, which are compulsory for both Chinese and English majors. Apart from the 60-credit English Major Core (including the 6-credit Honours Project), there is a 21-credit Elective component. Of the 21 credits for meeting the Elective requirement, English Majors have the option of studying 15 credits or more to obtain a minor in Chinese and Chinese Majors to obtain one in English. Students may discuss study paths with their Academic Advisor before deciding whether or not to study toward a minor. The 12-credit General Education component will allow English majors to explore other academic areas of study of interest to them such as Psychology and International Studies. And, just as there are both curricula and co-curricular activities to help English majors enhance their proficiency in English (e.g., Content-and-Language-Integrated Learning, Intensive Language Summer Camp, and internship opportunities, local or overseas), so English majors may study up to 90 hours of Putonghua enhancement courses (optional). These language support mechanisms are designed to help English majors meet the Language Exit Requirements for both English and Putonghua.
