Module Synopsis

This course introduces students to the biochemical mechanisms behind human behaviors relevant to psychopharmacology, as well as the related psychological, social, and cultural issues. Students will learn the basic cellular and molecular concepts of drug actions in the nervous system. Students will also examine the functions of a number of neurotransmitters, their relationships with various psychological disorders, the mechanism of psychoactive drugs and the biochemical basis of addiction and detoxification. Through studying the latest research in psychopharmacology, the course will equip students with the ability to evaluate the pros and cons in using medicine to treat psychological disorders using a multidimensional, integrative approach. Special topics such as drug rehabilitation will be introduced.
