VALUES, ETHICS AND EDUCATION
Module Synopsis
單元概要
The ability to engage in ethical reasoning and analyze real cases where there is ethical disputation has become indispensible for professionals in the field of education. Indeed, it is something of a cliché that nothing in education is “value-free”. But what, exactly, are values, and how do they assist us in making sound ethical judgements? This course deals with values and ethics in the lives of human persons, and related questions about what it means to educate for a worthwhile and meaningful life. These questions are grounded in the wider moral implications of education, the consequences for the ethics of teaching, and issues of autonomy, authority and discipline. The course will provide both an introduction to the major traditions – both Eastern and Western – in moral philosophy, and an analysis of specific practical issues in education in the light of these traditions. A deep understanding of these questions will involve such concepts as rights, fairness, freedom and social justice, etc. Students will examine ways in which such concepts are intertwined in real-life ethical issues One topical issue to be explored concerns the traditional tension between a “Western” view of ethics based around the individual and his/her rights, freedom and autonomy, and an “Eastern” view based around notions of social harmony, filial responsibility and loyalty.
