INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVES ON EDUCATION IN HONG KONG

The course will develop a fundamental understanding of education development, and of education in Hong Kong, by considering education from international and comparative perspectives. Given increasing rates of globalization, it is difficult to understand education in Hong Kong in isolation from broader international trends. This course begins with an overview of how historical, cultural, political and economic factors influence the development of education in Hong Kong. It then looks into issues such as contemporary curriculum reforms, QA frameworks, Hong Kong as a multi-cultural society, changes in the student population and internationalization of local school system. It also considers the implications and impact of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The agenda contains 17 goals including a new global education goal (SDG 4). SDG 4 is to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. In summary, students will develop an international perspective on key issues in the Hong Kong education system currently and willing to have professional excellence.
