CONTEXT, IDEOLOGY AND VALUES OF INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS
Module Synopsis
單元概要
This foundational course develops participants’ knowledge of the theoretical and philosophical issues that underpin international education in Hong Kong. It helps students to answer four key questions: What is international education? What are international schools? Who are international school students? What comparisons can be made with local or national education systems? Students will explore issues related to globalization, inter-culturalism, and intercultural communication (i.e. internationalization) as a basis for identifying and comparing values and beliefs embedded in national and international schools and systems. These constructs will be applied to make sense of the purposes of international education and implications for curriculum, values and ethics (e.g., curriculum aims, school choice, and student equity) with reference to examples of various manifestations of international education and international schools found in Hong Kong and Asia. Four International Baccalaureate (IB) programs (Primary Years, Middle Years, Diploma and Career-related) will be drawn upon to exemplify and critique on attempt to grapple with issues of context, ideology and values.
