The course will develop a fundamental understanding of education development, and of education in Hong Kong, by considering education from international and comparative perspectives. Given increasing rates of globalization, it is difficult to understand education in Hong Kong in isolation from broader international trends. This course begins with an overview of how historical, cultural, political and economic factors influence the development of education in Hong Kong. It then looks into issues such as contemporary education reforms, the new systems of examinations and assessment, QA frameworks, Hong Kong as a multi-cultural society, changes in the student population and internationalization of local school system. It also considers the implications and impact of “Education for All", asking questions about which groups are typically excluded from schools in many countries. In summary, students will develop an international perspective on key issues in the Hong Kong education system today.
