This course develops students' knowledge and understanding of the history and major themes of sustainable development and the role of international education in working towards a sustainable future at local as well as international level, addressing the complexity and interconnectedness of the world we live in. Together with peers and instructors from one to two partner international educational institutions, students will collaborate and reflect critically on case studies that illustrate the role of international education for a sustainable future. Moreover, students will gain insight in how international educational curricula, programmes and activities can be oriented towards sustainable development. Students will also visit an educational organization and critically analyze the implementation of the initiatives in the light of education for sustainable development and a sustainable future. The course is built around the following six key questions: 1. What is sustainable development and what is the underlying value base? 2. What is the role of international education in working towards a sustainable future? 3. What does Education for Sustainable Development mean? 4. What are the objectives of international education for a sustainable future? 5. What are the actions needed to (re)orient international education for sustainable development? 6. What are the key concepts of possible "futures" and how can these be built into the curriculum?
