The Education Bureau is committed to implementing integrated education (IE) for students with special educational needs (SEN) who can benefit from education in ordinary schools. To further enhance teachers' capacity in supporting students with SEN, a 5-year teacher professional development framework on special education has been started from 2007/08 school year.
Department of Educational Psychology, Counselling and Learning Needs (EPCL) of The Hong Kong Institute of Education was commissioned by the Education Bureau of HKSAR to run the following training courses. Centre for Special Needs and Studies in Inclusive Education provided coordination work.
- Basic Course on Catering for Diverse Learning Needs (2008-2009)
(EDB Course code: SAS020080125) (30 hours, 1 week)
The course aims at enhancing teacher competency in catering for classroom diversity. Participants will learn the principles and policy of integrated education in Hong Kong, understand the various special needs, acquire the related supporting strategies and skills, and develop a positive and appropriate attitude. On completion of the course, participants should know how to identify and catering for diverse learning needs of students in classroom. Course details are as follows:
- Advanced Course on Catering for Diverse Learning Needs (2008-2009)
(EDB Course Code: SAS020080126) (90/120 hours, 3/4 weeks)
The course aims at enhancing teacher competency in creating the inclusive school. Participants will examine the whole school approach framework, learn how to build up inclusive policy, practice and culture and understand the needs of two categories of special needs and the related supporting work. Participants need to plan, make try-outs and review their school programmes in catering for special needs.
- Thematic Courses on Education of Students with Special Educational Needs (2008-2009)
(EDB Course Code: CGSAS020080015) (60 hours, 2 weeks)
The Thematic Courses aim at enhancing the teaching competency in teaching students with various types of special needs. Participants will further review the characteristics, educational needs, supporting strategies, curriculum accommodation, teaching resources, behaviour management, team work and community support for a particular category of students with special needs. The learning will be both of theoretical and practical in nature. The Thematic Courses include the following them:
- Education of Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (SAS020080127)
- Education of Students with Intellectual Disability (SAS020080129)
- Education of Students with Physical Disability (SAS020080131)
- Education of Students with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties (SAS020080128)
- Education of Students with Hearing Impairment (SAS020080132)
- Education of Students with Visual Impairment (SAS020080133)
- Education of Students with Speech and Language Impairment(SAS020080130)
- Workshop on Catering for Diverse Learning Needs for Teaching Assistants Working in Ordinary Schools (2008-2009)
(EDB Course Code: SAS020080141) (12 hours, 2 days)
The workshops aim at enhancing the front-line teaching assistant’s knowledge and skills in assisting teachers to cater for diversity. Participants will learn the principles and policy of integrated education, acquire the practical skills and develop a positive and appropriate attitude to students. On completion of the workshops, participants should know how to assist teacher in helping students with diverse learning needs in schools.
