Special Education Programme commissioned by the Education Bureau of HKSAR (2009-2010)

 

Background

The Education Bureau is committed to implementing integrated education (IE) for students with special educational needs (SEN) who can benefit from education in ordinary schools. To further enhance teachers' capacity in supporting students with SEN, a 5-year teacher professional development framework on special education has been started from 2007/08 school year.

Department of Special Education and Counselling (SEC) of The Hong Kong Institute of Education was commissioned by the Education Bureau of HKSAR to run the following training courses. Centre for Special Needs and Studies in Inclusive Education provided coordination work.
 
  • Basic Course on Catering for Diverse Learning Needs (2009-2010)
    (EDB Course code:  SAS020090039) (30 hours, 1 week)

The course aims at enhancing teacher competency in catering for classroom diversity. Participants will learn the principles and policy of integrated education in Hong Kong, understand the various special needs, acquire the related supporting strategies and skills, and develop a positive and appropriate attitude. On completion of the course, participants should know how to identify and catering for diverse learning needs of students in classroom. Course details are as follows:

  • Advanced Course on Catering for Diverse Learning Needs (2009-2010)
    (EDB Course Code: SAS020090040) (90/120 hours, 3/4 weeks)
The course aims at enhancing teacher competency in creating the inclusive school. Participants will examine the whole school approach framework, learn how to build up inclusive policy, practice and culture and understand the needs of two categories of special needs and the related supporting work. Participants need to plan, make try-outs and review their school programmes in catering for special needs.
 
  •  Thematic Courses on Education of Students with Special Educational Needs (2009-2010)
    (EDB Course Code: CGSAS020090006) (60 hours, 2 weeks)

The Thematic Courses aim at enhancing the teaching competency in teaching students with various types of special needs. Participants will further review the characteristics, educational needs, supporting strategies, curriculum accommodation, teaching resources, behaviour management, team work and community support for a particular category of students with special needs. The learning will be both of theoretical and practical in nature. The Thematic Courses include the following them:

 
    • Education of Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (SAS020090103)
    • Education of Students with Intellectual Disability (SAS020090104)
    • Education of Students with Physical Disability (SAS020090105)  
    • Education of Students with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties (SAS020090106)
    • Education of Students with Hearing Impairment (SAS020090107)
    • Education of Students with Visual Impairment (SAS020090108)
    • Education of Students with Speech and Language Impairment(SAS020090109)

Course Vacancy


Methold of application

Application should be submitted via the EDB Training Calendar, please find details in http://tcs.edb.gov.hk. Application of each course is in first-served basis and the application deadline should be 4 weeks before the course commencement.


Enrolment and notification

Each course will be confirmed to run depending on the number of applicants and the Centre’s arrangement. The major consideration of the selection process will include the eligibility criteria of each applicant and the first-come-first-served basis. All applications should be approved by the EDB before the announcement of enrolment result. Successful applicants will be notified three weeks prior the course commencement through the e-Services email and facsimile of school. Applicants should check the enrolment results by themselves and respond to the Centre for required particulars. For those who fail to do so, their training places will be replaced by applicants of the waiting list.


Procedure of course change/withdrawal

Applicant who has applied the Basic, Advanced or Thematic Course via EDB Training Calendar and has been approved by the school principal, wishing to change or withdraw from the course enrollment, must submit a written e-mail to secsnsie@ied.edu.hk. The written application must include the applicant full name in Chinese and English, contact number, e-service username, school name, applied course name, course code and cohort, details of the changes/withdrawals. The center staff will follow-up once received the email. Please note that all proposed applications via telephone will not be accepted, sorry about any inconvenience caused.
