Learning Study is a multi-functional teaching and learning research activity. Teachers will be guided through a theoretical framework that maximises the benefits from engaging in such professional development activities (such as collaborative planning and peer lesson observation). SPFEO will provide consultancy to schools and teachers on Learning Study. This can be done through two modes of collaboration:

SPFEO Consultants and teachers will form a research team and conduct a full case of Learning Study, including identifying students’ learning problems, designing test papers, exploring significant object of learning, designing lessons, reflecting on classroom implementation and evaluating the effectiveness of the whole study. A Learning Study normally lasts 3-4 months. We hope after experiencing such an action research, teachers can master the key to improve classroom teaching and learning. After having received appropriate training, teachers can even work as the core members to set up another research team and lead other Learning Studies.

Teachers who are familiar with Learning Study (e.g. they may have participated in a Learning Study or have taken relevant courses organized by SPFEO), can make use of SPFEO Consultants’ service. SPFEO Consultants provide their expertise on designing pre-test, confirming object of learning, designing patterns of variation and teaching activities at the Learning Study meetings initiated by teachers.
With the help of SPFEO Consultants, teachers who have experienced Learning Study can guide new teachers in conducting Learning Study and in achieving further professional development. They may also tackle some teaching problems or develop school-based curriculum through Learning Study. After finishing the lesson plan, schools and teachers may arrange one of their teaching cycles as Lesson Analysis and Conferencing Activity. Such arrangement can be beneficial to all the teachers in the school, as well as to the development of a Lesson Study culture in the school.

If schools would like to apply for funds from the government in order to conduct Learning Study, such as the Quality Education Fund, the Language Fund and English Enhancement Scheme, SPFEO will also provide relevant information and support.
