Lesson Analysis and Conferencing Activity

Peer observation is an important tool for teacher development. There is great potential in enhancing this activity to fundamentally change the mindsets towards teaching and produce significant leap in professional development. The Lesson Analysis and Conferencing Activity aims to maximize the benefit of peer observation by involving the whole school in professional dialogue over teaching and learning.

In this activity, the School can arrange one teacher to teach a single or a double lesson. All teachers from the School can take part in lesson observation. After the lesson is taught, SPFEO Consultant will interview students about the learning that has taken place and how it corresponds to the intended objectives. The analysis of the lesson will be largely based on such feedback to provide an understanding of the merits and areas for improvement of the lesson.

¡½ Level or subject:

No limit
¡½ Length of the lesson:
  No more than 80 minutes
¡½ Participating teachers:

Teachers of the same subject or all teachers in a school
¡½ Time for Analysis and Conferencing:
  Around 45 minutes (including Q&A)

In the process, SPFEO Consultants will illustrate lesson analysis based on the framework of "Theory of Variation" and "Learning Study". Through participating in lesson observation and its subsequent discussions, teachers can learn to appreciate important aspects of a good lesson, which could then be transferred to their everyday teaching. Schools may subscribe this activity for their teacher development days, as a platform for engaging teachers in meaningful professional development.
