Department of English 英文系
A Critical
Analysis of English Grammar in Secondary Textbooks
In the 1990s grammar instruction
has returned to a position of some importance. How grammar is presented
in current textbooks is worth investigating. In this study a collection
of current secondary textbooks commonly used in Hong Kong will
be examined. Through this study, it is hoped that grammar teaching
and learning in Hong Kong will be enhanced. Writers of grammar
books and coursebooks can describe contemporary English in different
styles accurately and can provide meaningful contexts for students
to use English so as to develop their English accuracy and fluency.

A Study of
the Progress and Extent of Success in Integrating Full-time and
Part-time Modes of Delivery in the PGDE(S) Programme and Its
Impact on the Implementation Quality of the Programme
This project aims to study
the progress and extent of success in the implementation of integrating
full-time and part-time modes of the PGDE(S) programme and the
impact on the learning and teaching quality of the programme. Specifically,
the project will study the following aspects: 1) To what extent
have participants of different modes been working together or separately
and how have assignment requisites differed from each other and
how have their assessments varied? 2) What are the impacts of online
learning on the teaching and learning quality of the two modes
of delivery? 3) Implementation quality of the MOI policy that requires
participants to study at least 25% of programme credit points through
the English medium.

An Exploratory
Comparative Study of the Management of Change in Three Language
Schemes Using Native Speaker Teachers of English in State Schools
The purpose of this project
is to carry out an exploratory comparative analysis of three schemes
which employ native speakers of English to support the learning
of English within state school systems. The three programmes to
be compared are the NET (Native-speaking English Teacher) scheme
in Hong Kong, the JET (Japan Exchange and Teaching) scheme in Japan
and the EPIK (English Program in Korea) scheme in South Korea.
The significance of the study will be its contribution to the literature
on the management of change in projects involving native speakers.
It is also hoped to identify and disseminate good practice in the
use of native speakers in state school systems.

Effective Practices
in Teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) at Secondary Level
in Hong Kong
In the process of delivering
Methods and Curriculum modules at secondary level, lectures always
find the need to illustrate theories and practices. Videoed lessons
are thus seen as valuable teaching and learning resources for both
lectures and students. In view of this need, this application is
submitted to seek financial support to collect demonstration lessons
in a systematic way. It is expected that both lecturers and students
will benefit from the out comes of this project since the demonstration
lessons will help to provide concrete examples of effective teaching
strategies and the essential elements of a communicative and integrated
English language lesson.

Field Experience
Assessment: The Professional Development Progress Map
By developing a new generic
field experience assessment framework with the professional development
progress map as its core, the overall aim of the proposed project
is to promote learning-oriented assessment in field experience
in the HKIEd. This represents a change in the conceptualization
of assessment in field experience, which entails a shift away from
a summative paradigm to the use of the progress map for the dual
purpose of assessment for learning and assessment of learning. Specifically,
the proposed project aims at: 1) Developing a field experience
assessment framework with the professional development progress
map as its core; 2) Conducting consultation with various stakeholders
to inform the development of the framework; and 3) Conducting an
action research on the trial use of the proposed progress map. By
engaging in these three areas of work, the project will contribute
to ongoing improvements in the field experience assessment in the
teacher education programmes offered by the Institute.

Implementing
a Task-based Curriculum: A Self-learning Package for Secondary
School Teachers of English
Since the introduction
of a task-based approach to the English language curriculum in
the CDC syllabus for English language (Secondary 1-5) (1999), there
have been a growing need for teachers to be better equipped for
the changes required by the new curriculum. Coupled with the recent
education reform initiatives of the Key Learning Areas, many English
teachers are concerned about ways of implementing task-based teaching
in the curriculum in the new context. The self-learning package
is to support and empower frontline and prospective teachers in
implementing the changes in the English classroom. The package
will present ways of implementing a task-based approach to the
English language curriculum systematically, and help teachers understand
how existing practices (like grammar teaching, class reader) can
be integrated meaningfully in the task-based curriculum, and how
more creative activities and resources could be employed.

Tapping the
Thought Processes of Students in L2 Oral Tasks
The project aimed to understand
the thought processes of students when engaging in oral communication
tasks in the junior secondary ESL classroom in Hong Kong. Speaking
is normally performed under real time and is not easily accessible.
This poses considerable challenge to teachers when they try to
understand students' difficulties in speaking English and to help
them develop their oral skills. In view of this, it was worth trying
to understand the kinds of communication problems that students
might encounter during on-line speech production and the strategic
steps they might take to resolve those problems.

Teaching and

Theories to the Practical Contexts of Teaching in Schools (Phase
III)
This project initiates
teaching staff to form an action research team across academic
departments of HKIEd to enhance teaching and learning in the B.Ed & PGDE
Programmes. Team members conceptualize the theories they preach
and meet regularly to exchange ideas on their framework and experiences
in their teaching. Each member identifies and reviews with literature
support 2-3 theoretical concepts and convictions in their area
of teaching in a module selected for this action research. They
will then develop a sustainable process of how theories they preach
become relevant to the practical context of teaching in schools.
Several sessions of experience sharing will be held and a publication

Using Language
Objectives to Address Language Proficiency in a Teacher Education
Programme
The major study of which
this is the first stage, seeks to discover whether the use of specified
language objectives is an effective way of enabling content programmes
to address all aspects of language proficiency. Language objectives
are targeted aspects of language use, selected because they are
likely to occur naturally in the exploration of the content area
under discussion. When applied to an entire content syllabus, such
as that for teacher education, they are an attempt to map a complete
language curriculum onto a content area curriculum, so that all
necessary aspects of language fluency are covered through the content
area teaching.
The goal of this research
is to assess the effectiveness of this use of language objectives,
via an examination of teacher process and attitude, and of student
perception and performance. The research is expected to make a
significant contribution to an understanding of how a second language
can be successfully developed within a tertiary-level content programme.

Using Online
Bilingual Glossary Support to Enhance DDL - Phase II
This project focuses on
some of the practical aspects of computational lexicography involved
in the process of implementing a bilingual online glossary based
on a subject-specific glossary-assisted model (SSGA) with the aim
of assisting Chinese learners undertaking English-medium courses
in linguistics. The online bilingual glossary has been developed
as part of the Net Dictionary. The vocabulary items from students'
reading texts are linked directly to the Net Dictionary, and students
can simply click on a lexical item and the dictionary lookup will
instantly display its Chinese equivalent together with its definition
and other information.
