Case Study Exploratory of the Instructional Strategies behind the Choral Director's Choice of Communication Modes used in Choral Rehearsals in a Sample Hong Kong Primary School

In choral rehearsal the conductor will determine strategies and techniques to facilitate communication with the choir in order to achieve specific goals. Communication between choir and conductor is fundamental for a smooth rehearsal process and a successful performance. Hylton (1995) stated in Comprehensive Choral Music Education "In rehearsal three basic modes of communication are available to the conductor: verbalization, demonstration and conducting gestures". This case study was conducted in a sample Hong Kong Primary Schools to explore the rationale behind the conductor's choice of communication modes used in the rehearsals and to compare the effectiveness of the three basic modes in communicating different kinds of musical features.

Teaching Chinese Traditional Music in Hong Kong: A Comparison of the Effectiveness of the Two Teaching Approaches

This research aims at evaluating which teaching approach that advocated by Keith Swanwick (Swanwick, 1988) and Robert Walker (Walker, 1990) is likely to be more powerful and effective to teach traditional Chinese music for secondary school students, and help them to appreciate Chinese culture through Chinese music. An experimental design will be used to compare the two approaches. Data of students' attitude and musical understanding of the taught traditional Chinese music will be collected using a five-point likert scale attitude inventory, written response on the musical understanding. Data of teachers' comment and evaluation of the two teaching strategies will be collected by semi-structured interviews and written reflections on the lessons taught and students' feedback. Analysis of teaching strategies will be undertaken utilizing themes derived from interviews and reflections of teachers and students.

The Experiential Approach to Teaching Art History: Hong Kong Heritage (Roof Figurine on Traditional Chinese Architectures) 體驗式美術史教學試驗計劃:香港文物《中國傳統脊飾》

The experiment done by Taylor, R. (1994) proved that students' understanding in artwork could well enhance their creative ability (Palmer, F., 1990). This project adopted the "Experiential Approach To Teaching Art History" by Smith A. (1993) in an attempt to integrate knowledge studied from historical contexts into contemporary artwork creation on the seldom explored theme of artwork found on traditional Chinese architectures. The project is done in schools from the three demographic regions in Hong Kong. Teachers in these schools developed their projects basing on heritage found in the school districts. The aim of the project is to study the effect of this approach on students from different categories.

The Perception of Chinese Cultural and Musical Heritage of the Student Teachers before and after They Join the Hong Kong Institute of Education

This project aims at investigating the way that the student teachers perceive Chinese cultural and musical heritage before and after they joined the Institute.

There is an urge from the society to alert students to treasure Chinese culture and traditions. There could be various ways and channels to initiate and bring out the emphasis. Music teaching could be one of them. However, the contents and the ways of presentation could be somewhat affected by the practitioners in certain degree even though there is the provision of the curriculum content of Chinese music in the music syllabus. Thus, it is interesting to know the perception of Chinese cultural and musical heritage of the student teachers particularly before and after they joined the Institute, as there would be a change of status from a student of secondary school to a student teacher.
