Professor Peter Webster

Peter Webster is the John Beattie Professor of Music Education and Music Technology at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois. He holds degrees in music education from the University of Southern Maine (BS) and the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester (MM, PhD). Prior to Northwestern, Webster taught in the public schools of Maine, Massachusetts and New York and was on the faculty at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio for 14 years. His teaching responsibilities at Northwestern include courses in research and measurement, the psychology of musical behavior, creative thinking in music, and computer music technology and its impact on music teaching and learning. His published work includes articles on technology, perception, preference, and creative thinking in music. His writings have appeared in Psychomusicology, Journal of Research in Music Education, Contributions to Music Education, Research Studies in Music Education, American Music Teacher, Music Education Research, Council for Research in Music Education Bulletin , Arts Education and Policy Review, and in journals outside the field of music. He serves on many editorial boards and is a frequent speaker at state, national, and international conferences. He has served as a guest lecturer for colleges in Australia, Hong Kong, the UK, and in Portugal. Webster holds important positions in music technology, including the presidency of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction the leading organization for college teachers interested in music technology.
Webster is co-author with David Williams of Experiencing Music Technology, 2nd edition (Wadsworth/Thompson, 2000) (http://www.orat.ilstu.edu/emtbook/emtbook.html) , the standard textbook and CD used in introductory college courses in music technology. He is writing a new book on music composition in the schools with the music education doctoral students and faculty at Northwestern.
